"On Monday Amazon said it would begin to produce and acquire feature films for theatrical release that it would then stream on Amazon Prime four to eight weeks after the theatrical debut. Amazon said its goal was to cut down the 39 to 52 weeks it usually takes for theatrical releases to make it to streaming services. Amazon, for its own part, said it planned to produce 12 movies a year.In an e-mail to the New York Times, Amazon Vice President Roy Rice described Amazon's upcoming films as “'indie' movies with budgets between $5 million and $25 million.”

This is the future of "independent" film making --- as a loss leader for a streaming service.

Might be a good opportunity for some indy film makers to get some recognition. Dust off them demo reels everybody! On the other hand, maybe they will just finance/produce A-list film makers looking to do 'personal' projects....

They're definitely starting with the A-listers because nothing else gives them the desired attention but you have to figure that, at some point, all the streamers will be facing this dilemma - buy more of old reruns that everyone either has seen or avoided before or try for some B-material to fill out the inventory. In the TV biz of a many years ago, a "TV movie of the week" was a major feature (there was also major theatrical releases as well ... the era before cable took over). This sort of programming will probably be making a comeback once the streaming companies have consolidated themselves.
