I look at this video and I realized my footage from my HDSLR has never looked this good, so to the community or anyone who reads this thread....... Is it possible to create something like this with an HDSLR and what do I need to do it?

I remember seeing CITY OF LAKES and it looks amazing just like this video so I guess it's possible. Do I need better lenses? What lens would I have to use to achieve quality like this?

Thanks

What's so amazing about this? Nothing fancy here, just some great lighting and good looking talent. That's all.

IMO the Picture quality and lighting is superb. Sorry if you feel it was not good, I have a passion for Music Videos so to me this is near perfection. So what you did notice was lighting, so I need to work on some serious lighting techniques.

So just regarding IMAGE QUALITY do you feel that I can do this with a DSLR?

Thanks and please refrain from and bad comments

I actually thought it was pretty terrible. To me, music video perfection is Jay-Z's 99 Problems.
Anyway, yes I do think you could do something similar with a DSLR.

Pretty cool. The split-screen got a little old. Too much of a gimmick. Although girls in bikinis never gets old. I like the photography though. You could do this with your DSLR as long as you focus on controlling the light (pun intended). You'd need some flex fills and butterflies at the very least. Next step up is some HMI lighting. But to get that shallow DOF on the beach, you need to open up the lens - and what you'll need most is a set of ND filters or VarND to control the amount of light hitting the sensor.

It wasnt terrible, qualitywise and overall look of course, but as music video it was quite random, i think that 5D side to side with their cam would produce similar results with the same colour correction.

The camera doesn't matter. What matters most in this video is the lighting and composition.

They've got plenty of lights/reflectors to fill in the shadows and give the faces a really nice soft, even look like afternoon light. Alot of it looks like it was shot in the shade so they could create their own lighting rather than trying to match the sun with their lights. Also looks like alot of it was shot on an overcast day which helps prevent harsh shadows - this really makes a difference for the boat shots where they wouldnt've had as much freedom to set up lights.

Notice how the DoP uses the rule of thirds and balances his shots - and intentionally breaks the rule with the dancers who are centre-screen. Also see how he creates leading diagonals with the palm tree, waterfall and rocks in the background of select shots.

The CC also helps it pop alot. slightly warming the skin tones while cooling down the background really makes the models stick out from the blue water.

While not everyones cup of tea, and not original at all, the production value of this clip is through the roof. They can afford a location shoot with boats and helicopters, so you can bet your arse they spared no expense when hiring the best Director/DOP/cinematographer they could get. The quality of the images doesn't depend on the camera, but on the people operating it.

So to answer your question, yes, this type of video could be shot on a DSLR.

LOL @ Robin Thicke. The video looked pretty good, probably shot on the red or a Sony camera.

Thank you for the very informative post, and personally I was judging the Music Video not the artist or song in general. I need to work on my lighting a lot then because I feel I am no where close. If anyone can point me to some places online or this very website it would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly this was not meant as the greatest video in the world, it was meant as something that in my personal opinion I feel is amazing and would love to reach this level one day.

Thank you for the comments.
