Am I nuts?

Well okay we already know that's a yes, but...

I had a competing videographer, never met him, email me the other day wanting to know my rates and what services I had to offer. Now am I crazy, or is this just stupid?

...it's a technique used without shame in the sales world. they cold-call competition pretending to be customers, asking about prices, services, etc. yeah, it's stupid, but only because he doesn't seem to have a marketing plan other than to ask other poeple what they're doing and charging. that's something you do when you're just starting out, but not if you consider yourself a pro...i don't know...

tell him you charge twice the amount you actually make, and only list half the services you really provide.

Note to self: practice falsetto.

okay good so I'm not completely paranoid. Yeah I'm just kind of starting out myself, I'm thinking, if you want to know this stuff the least you could do is lie and say you're a customer.

Tell him your joining Peace Corps and you will be donating your gear to the Salvation Army.

Or you could just aksed the competitor who is he working for , whose the client , is it one my old clients etc just to make him feel uncomfortable.
Never give something to a competitor without getting something back.

nah. i say tell him you charge half what you actually make, and list twice the services you actually provide. let him compete with that.

make him feel uncomfortable ay? Maybe I should go Jack Bauer on him, "WHO SENT YOU, ARE YOU WEARING A WIRE?!?"

Edit: Here's the message I sent,

Thanks for your response. My typical day rate is $300. I offer 3 XDcams, full audio support, aerial videography (my dad's a helicopter pilot). I own some underwater housings so I can do scuba footage if needed. All events can be blu-ray mastered and I'm also a colorist. How bout you, what are your rates and services?
