I have imported video footage from a shoot and there are two issues.

1. the footage looks much grainier compared to how it appears in the viewfinder.
2. when I export and put it on the net there are like invisible lines going through the footage.

Anyone know what I am talking about and could help me out?

Thanks a lot.

Need lots of info.

Need to know how you shot -- frame rate, etc.

Need to know how you're editing -- what software, what kind of a timeline, etc..

Need to know how you exported -- format, settings, etc.

All of that needs to be as detailed as possible.

okay I shot with the dvx 100a - editing in fcp. the timeline im pretty sure is dv ntsc 720 x 480?

exported with quicktime conversion h.264 quality high - key frame rate 150 - bit rate 672

OK, the "invisible lines" are interlace artifacts; if you want 24p progressive frames, then shoot 24pA and edit on a 23.98 timeline; export as 23.976.

As for the "grain" -- well, don't know; could be a function of the compression.

thanks for the help david - the reason i ask if i need to re import is because it looks grainy even in FCP

Yes, that's part of it. Capture with advanced pulldown removal, edit as 23.98, export as 23.98, and the lines will not be there.

Does it look grainy played straight from the camera to a TV? If so, was it a low-light shoot? Shooting without sufficient light can increase the graininess.

And after all that it could simply be that your playing back at a much higher resolution than the actual footage. For example if you shot 720x480 and then are viewing that on a 1900x1200 monitor or higher and viewing the image larger than its acquisition it can make things look pretty bad at time, esp. if that monitor is also not calibrated correctly.

not 2 highjack the thread but another 24p thread isnt necessary . i wanted to know if shooting 24p standard and editing on 24p timeline in an NLE that removes puldown automaticaly such as PP or Avid ect, that is true 24p right?

It looks exactly the same as 24PA. So if it looks like a duck etc etc.

It is edited on a 29.97 (60i) timeline.
