Alternative to FCP for 60-24 slowmo?

Hi chaps - I'm about to get a 550d.. Apologies if this is in the wrong section, but I thought it might be relevant.

I was planning on getting Final Cut Express, since for now all I'll be doing is pretty basic editing stuff, maybe a little compositing and playing around with fx. I've never owned a video camera before, and I'm trying to find the cheapest way of doing this.

It seems like FCE will do everything I need, apart from a big question mark over framerate stuff.

So will FCE deal with 24/25p ok - and most importantly, will it work with 60p footage and be able to use that on a 24p timeline to play super-smooth slo mo?

If not, is there any workaround, or similarly priced software thart would do the job?

I don't need all the pro features of FCP, and after spending £700 on a camera I don't really want to spend more than that on software alone, just to be able to get slowmo working!

I haven't used the latest FCE version, but the last one that I did use DID NOT support 24p timelines. Major deal breaker for me. I don't know of a way to conform 60p to 24 without Cinema tools or Compressor, both of which come with FCS. (maybe mpeg streamclip does it)

You can find FCS2 used on ebay for around $300-450. I would strongly suggest you get FCP instead, especially if you plan on doing more in the future. There were many features I missed from FCP. Especially the DVD authoring and MPEG encoding of Compressor and DVDSP.

IMO- FCE is great for making home movies at 30i and it gives you a few more tools than iMovie. Anything more, you really want FCP.

Hmm, theres got to be a way to just edit the out of camera files directly and swap "60" for "24" in a hex editor. Its only meta data.
