Alright, i narrowed it down.

I've finally decided to go out and plunk down my money on a Red Rock m2.

BUT... Ive heard many poor comments about the original red rock and so now, ive been leaning towards the jag35 XL.

Price wise, the red rock is only a wee bit more expensive than the jag (with achromat and a set of four canon FD primes).

So which one? The elder or the homebrewed? :D

I see you shoot with a Canon A1. You should go with the SGBlade unit from shoot35.com (with rotorazor 2, IMO)

It is the BEST combo of camera and adapter that I've seen out there.

I haven't used the SGblade, but I have heard good things. But my friend shot with the Red Rock M2 and he told me it was a nightmare. Evidently, he shot his senior thesis film with it and had to overlight everything because of how much light loss he was getting. He told me the advertised half-stop of light loss was a gross miscalculation and that he was more like six or seven stops. I trust my friend's opinion since he knows his equipment and makes great films, so I'd be reluctant to buy a Red Rock just because of what he told me about their design.

the original redrock produced amazing images. the biggest gripe i had with it was the light loss. the edge to edge wasn't perfect but acceptable. however, this was the fault of the achromat, not the adapter itself. the new redrock has fixed both of these issues so maybe the new achromat would fix the edge to edge issue on the old adapter. light loss on the new adapter with the flip module is only 1/2 stop. light loss on the old m2 without a flip was 1.5 stops.

Well i checked out the blade. I love the look and the flexibility of the rotorazors, but its a bit out of my price range. The most i'm willing to spend on an adapter is $700 because im using some of my car fund :D

got to have my priorities. So what about the jag? Go for it?

to be honest, I'd rather shoot with a stock camera over a jag. Maybe look for a used letus extreme in the marketplace?

I would go with...neither. Adapters are expensive investments, especially when you're going non-flip. If you've never shot non-flipped before then you're going to be in for a rude shock because it's nearly impossible. Beside the adapter you need to budget for some kind of monitor that can be mount upside down, and I haven't even gotten started on lenses yet. I would say save up another $200 or so and look for a used Letus Extreme, and then a few hundreds more for a set of lenses.

As far as the old M2 goes, I frankly can't stand that adapter. When you can get it setup correctly it's capable of some nice images (see Marlon Torres' stuff), but most of the time it's like pulling teeth to set it up right. It'll work fine on one shoot and the next day it might not work at all; the simplest little thing can knock stuff out of alignment and then you can't get sharp focus or clear vignetting. I find it a highly unreliable tool.

Thanks Huy. I think i'm gonna save my money and instead go out on a limb and purchase a Brevis.

I've always liked 'em, but i've never had enough money for one :D

The brevis is a nice product. Make sure you buy either the Mp1 or the new Mp2, and stay away from the older versions- QC is better on the new units. Also order the Cinefuse 3 (the most expensive one) for day shots, and use the Cinefuse1 for night shots.

The Brevis is great for low light.

We've got a fairly major announcement on the Brevis MP.2 that will get you in the price range you're looking for. Think volume manufacturing and a significant price drop :-) Give us a week or so.

If you really want adapter footage on a small budget, we've got a non-flipped HG21 (small camera, 37mm filter threads) and rails package coming too. This one doesn't require an achromat, can use our 30cm carbon rods and a Proteus modified base plate. Our goal is to make adapter "crash" rigs for car mounts etc. practical and affordable :-) In the Cinevate Video University video we're just finishing editing, this light/compact rig is used on a jib with the Brevis MP.2 and a Nikon 17-35mm zoom lens, focused with remote focus controller. It's a very cool piece done at a new skateboard park about 300 ft from our facility.

Cheers,
Dennis.

I'm this close (you can't see me but I'm holding my thumb and my index finger an inch apart) from buying a SGblade package, but now with Dennis' post - I think I might wait a week to see what kind of deal you're offering, because in the past I was leaning towards the Brevis adapter but it was just a little out of my price range. And right now Shoot35 is offering free shipping.

The brevis is a fine adapter, alot of my friends have them or had them, however given the opinion between the SgPro and Brevis, I would choose the the Sgpro, they run about 600 used with everything included, make sure you get the tube. I had a extreme for a year and I didn't care for it much, I sold it and bought a SgBlade with both rotorazors. The extreme was heavy and in my opinion the bokeh was not as nice as my friend's SgPro. The brevis is really good in low light and has a really nice "soft" look to it in my opinion. However I got the blade becuase of the bokeh, the brevis has a unique bokeh to it however I didn't care for it.

Also like everyone is saying with a adapter, you have to factor in a baseplate, monitor, support etc, I spent like 25+ grand on my whole set up. I would really shoot the heck of the camera itself and see if you really want a adapter, I find alot of people of get pressured into buying them becuase evryone else does. The Xh-a1 is a beautiful camera by itself.

If you have any questions or anything about this subject PM me, I have shot with the Brevis, Redrock, SgPro, Blade, Letus Extreme and Letus Ultimate.

Yeah, i mean i already bought a rails set with a shoulder-mount and (for now) im using a small DVD player as a monitor.

When i listed everything and totaled it up, it came to a cool $2,000 (although probably less with what dennis's posted).

Besides that, i think i found a winner! :D

any more updates on this? i know it hasnt been a week yet but i was wondering if Dennis could maybe give us a little more info like maybe price, date the offer will be available, etc.. i really need an adapter, so if the brevis is a good deal then im going to be the first in line to buy it.

Please Dennis can you give us a just a little more info.:)

thanks in advance:dankk2:

I was actually gonna ask this right now! :D

Dennis, if you could, PM me with any details and such.

Thanks (from a future customer)

Same here. I'm pretty close to ordering an sgblade. I'm just waiting for the rr3 which is due to come out this week. Now with this brevis package coming out, i might consider the mp.2 again. Things are getting exciting.
