Already have lenses... can you recommend a camera?

Hi everyone,

I usually hang out over on the Sony F3 forum but I wanted to get your opinion over here....

I've been building up my collection of nikon mount lenses that I use on my Sony F3 with an adapter. Here's what I have:

Tokina SD 11-16 f2.8 (IF) DX
Tokina 28-70 f2.8 AT-X AF
Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200 f2.8

My current HDSLR that I sometimes use for video as a third camera is a Canon T2i. But now it seems silly to have all this glass for Nikon and a DSLR that can't use them.

So, not knowing much about AT-X and DX or the various levels of Nikon cameras and which are full-frame and which aren't... I'm looking for a suggestion on a Nikon DSLR that will shoot 1080p video at 30fps when I need it and also work with the above lenses.

Thanks much.

Depending on your budget, the new d5200 and d7100 seems rather promising a first glance. I would hang back a few days to see some more footage/reviews come up

Budget? Probably around what the T2i was new - $700ish for the body. What about the 3200?

Can someone give me a quick lesson on sensor size and lens coverage? The differene between DX and FX (is DX the smaller of the two? Meaning that my DX lens will not work on an FX camera) What's the AT-X on the Tokina signify? Sorry to be such a nikon still camera dunce. I've been living in a video camera world all my life.

The D3200 is nowhere near the D5200. It has horrible aliasing/moire, horrible rolling shutter, horrible everything.
I would only consider the D5200, D7100 (pending confirmation that it's similar to the D5200), or the D800.

Regarding sensor size: DX is APS-C (1.52x crop factor), FX is full frame (1x crop factor).

Of the lenses that you've mentioned, I think the only one that is not designed for full frame is the 11-16. They will work on a D5200 just as they do on your F3, with regards to field of view, depth of field, etc.

On a D800, the DX mode will be activated when you use the 11-16 (I have no idea how good IQ is in this mode). With all the others, the full sensor will be used. I guess you already know how this affects FoV and DoF, if not, head over here: http://www.similaar.com/foto/tuten/100.html http://www.similaar.com/foto/tuten/310.html

Firstly you can get a canon to nikon converter - so the lenses will work on the T2i

But if you want to do stills they wont work well.

As for a nikon body well there are the two mentioned above, both with apparently quite a good rep for video (they are ALL excellent stills cams)

Full frame is the D600 and D800, maybe actually not quite as good for video as the 7200 (according to eoshd!)

Your 11-16 is not a lens that will properly cover a 'full frame' sensor

I've shot for years with my Nikkor collection on a T2i - great combo. Adapters are cheap, get one for each lens you use often and EOS rear caps. Saves a lot of time.

The D7000 is a stellar stills cam and I'm really leaning towards its color rendering for video. They will be showing up used before long, and existing stock may get a price drop.

And yes, Nikkors work fine for stills on Canon - you'll be fully manual though. When my D7000 was in the shop, I did several product shoots with the T2i. it makes beautiful stills.

THe D7100 could be a really kickass combo for stills and video. Potentially clean HDMI out, and people are reporting way less aliasing from the 5200 which seems to share sensor setup with the 7100 as I recall. I'd keep an eye on it. If it pans out as hoped, I may well dump my T2i.

Mind you: he seems to have modern lenses, not vintage manual ones. So it is the camera that has to set the aperture. There are some adapters that will allow you to do that, but AFAIK it's a recipe for trouble.

Plus, any of D5200, D7100 (presumably) or D800 will run circles around a first-gen Canon. Not even the same league.

The colors on the D5200's video look much nice than the D7000 (which I had previously). My new D7100 arrives tomorrow, so I'll be doing a TON of photo and video testing during the week. I'll post the results when everything is compiled next weekend. Can't wait, since this camera seems to be just as significant a jump in photo and video quality as the D7000 was over the D90 (if not more on the photo side).

How does the 5200 compare to the 5100? Is it 100 better? I see there are different frame rates on the 5200 - anything else? Remember this is primarily a C camera behind a Sony F3 - and used for goofing around with the family.

The D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000, so the D5200 is definitely superior. Sharper image, better color, less (no?) moire.

What is better for video, or are they the same between the 5200 and the 7100?

I would also like to see a compare of the GH3 and Nikon 7100. I am interested in mostly the video side of these cameras.
The price is nice on both of these cameras. I hope the 7100 will be great because I have Nikon lenses.

I can do D7100 vs GH2 if you want. Shouldn't be too much difference vs the GH3 except maybe dynamic range. Though the D7100 wipes the floor with an M4/3 camera as far as photos. It's just amazing, even compared to the D7000!

^^^Have to agree on the stills part. Coming from a D90 and Olympus E-PL1, the D7100 is on a whole 'nother level in the stills department. Even the top of the line micro 43 sensor (EM5, GH3) can't hold a candle to it.

Blue Bomber, you said you were going to do some tests. How were the results?
If I am more interested in the video part of the camera, and then still for family use, is there a reason why I would need to spend 800 more for a D600 over the D7100. From what I read, the D600 would be better in low light, but just wondering how much and if it is worth it.
Also, I read one post on autofocus problem with the D7100. But have not found any evidence to back it up. Do you agree?
I am within days of making a purchase. B&H photo is closed for about a week, any other good places to buy?
thanks

I had a D5100 and my guess is a used one or the D5200 with articulating screen would be best for Video on a low budget.
You might also consider a V1 or V2 as the FullTime AutoFocus actually works quite well.
Of course, these require AF-S lens to AutoFocus.

The D7000 does not do 1080P at 30fps, the new D7100 does.
It will also autofocus with almost any AF lens,
and it is possible (if you cycle with the info button) to get "clean" HDMI out.

I prefer to use the FullFrame D800 for everything.:)
