Alone

It's obvious that a higher power simply does not want me to finish this film. I was making my final file when a thunderstorm rolled though the St. Louis area and knocked out my computer in mid render. Looks like my disk needs to be rebuilt. I don't know how much I lost but it doesn't look good. Hasn't rained here in three month and it picks today to do this. Maybe next fest.

It was just too good. The powers that be knew the havoc that would have been unleashed had your finished film come to the light of day. I, for one, am thankful. Not for your lost time and effort, but for the good of all mankind.

Seriously though, that is some serious suck right there. I hope you don't have any lost hardware to contend with.

 ...so... I think you're in? Congrats on making it happen!
(unless I'm reading all the threads wrong.....in that case, sorry you didn't make it, but I'd still like to see it)

Cheers

As far as I know I'm in. Still haven't received word that what I think I sent in actually arrived where it was supposed to. :) I was so tired yesterday I didn't kbow who or where I was. I sort of finished the film. It's all there, but some of the CG and effects are not really complete. I still need to improve texturing and lighting in the renders, but I didn't have time to do it with a single computer so some of the effects are a little rough around the edges, especially toward the end. But, somehow, I got it done. Thanks for asking.

A very nice little movie you got here :) CG for what it was, was well done. Ending was funny too :p
Look forward to seeing your next dvx entry :D

Well that got a lot sexier than I had bargained for. Richard Id love to see this with the final touches/passes are added.

Incredibly ambitious short. I have a suite of FX and 3D rendering software but I am too impatient to render video. I have only really done photo realistic stills. I have the utmost respect for you making this effort. I enjoyed the story, and the ending was pretty hilarious. I just am not sure if I was laughing with the ending or at the ending...

I enjoyed this one. I was able to really get into the dread of being alone with a creepy computer. Haha! Very nicely put together.

lol, oh my. Love the ambition here. Definitely a big tale, and tons of work. Stellar concept. I didn't really like a gas mask as a space helmet. Definitely an unexpected ending! Cheers.

What if HAL had been female and sexy?

This was a lot of fun! I love the mixture of live action and CGI and thought this was a great dark and twisted sci-fi story. The ending was a cool and unexpected twist.

Congratulations on a another great entry. I just don't know where you find the time to do all that CGI work. My hat is off to you.

Kudos for all the CGI, nicely done. Agree, don't know how you got that mixture of live action, but thought it was effective.

Nice job of injecting some humor into what looked to be a sure death for the main character.
Enjoyed the "Minnie" banter.

Did not see that ending coming. lol
Good luck in the fest.

Talk about ambitious... I liked the mix of live action and CG and got a chuckle out of the twist.

I found it a little distracting that when the ship was static, nothing moved. Maybe add a little movement to the stars in the background might help with this. I also would have really loved some more motivated light in the ship, from screens, buttons, etc. I just found the int ship stuff a little flat.

I think you did something not many people would attempt in such a small amount of time. Well done.

Your CGI skills are way more than mine will ever be. And it says a lot that you took such a difficult path for your fest entry. Very well done on that note alone. There were a few CGI moments that I thought suffered (the ship coming to a complete halt after the engines stopped ... it is space after all and there is no friction), but for the most part it was really good. I felt that the "sex toy" ending was out of place. It didn't fit with the tone of the rest of the film for me, but I did like the personality that you gave the computer.

Well done.

Way to animate!

I had a few qualms, and there are a few shots that are static and linger too long. I think it's a rule in animation that you should always have some movement every shot, and for the most part you did, but a few things stuck out.

I enjoyed the uh... jiggle at the end. :)

It was something different and I appreciate seeing it in the fest.

Good work.

As always, if you haven't seen this short yet, please stop reading this post as there are SPOILERS throughout.

What I liked: Your CGI. I can't do it, so you always amaze me at how much you do for the fests. I can't state that enough. To be able to knock out CG short after CG short is nothing short of amazing. I liked the "Cortana" reconstruction of Minnie, too. Nice twist. I can't really comment on lighting or anything on here

What I didn't like as much: I would liked to have known a little more about why he was out there, and why that ship was firing at him, but that's just me. It seemed like he was firing rockets at the incoming missile, and suddenly he was flying at high speed away from it. Also, the sound didn't seem like "space" sound to me. But that's all speculation as I've never been to outer space.

Thanks for the review, Hawk. Maybe my storytelling was a little weak here. The pilot and his scout ship have been stranded in space after his mothership was destroyed in battle by a suicide ship - as we learn from his ship's computer, Minerva, and via a flashback. As he sits alone in the void, an enemy drone locks onto his ship and he tries to outrun the drone. He never fires any rockets, he just tries to escape from the drone. His command to "fire rockets" is to Minerva to fire the engines on his ship.

And, as I posted earlier, there is no sound in space, it's a vacuum out there, so, as you point out, my sounds are just cheap dramatic invention.

And thanks for your review, AJ. You're correct on the static nature of some of the shots. This is no excuse - I knew the deadline of the contest - but some of the shots are not finished and are placeholders. I still have to render many of the scenes with multiple passes, more texturing and shadow work. Minnie's robot body should be much more reflective and "chrome-like" and will be in the final version. In the last scene she's supposed to put her hands on her hips and jiggle her booty, but I didn't have time to finish even the animation. None of this is an excuse. I entered the film fully knowing its flaws and gladly accept the fact that it should and will be judged as it stands, since everyone else finished their effort on time and with a completed project.

That was GREAT... finished or not! I can't even imagine the amount of time that goes into something like this. I really enjoyed it (flaws & all).
Please make sure to keep us posted as to when you 'finish' it.... I for one would like to see it.

Well done Taylormade.
