GH2 All things quiet on the GH2 hack western front?

Just got hold of a GH2 which I'm in the process of hacking - been shooting thus far on a mix of GH13s and an AF100. But it seems that there's been very little news or development on the GH2VK, at least compared to the GH13, in terms of optimized settings, ongoing releases of patches and so on. How are people getting on generally? Is the 132MB patch the one to go for?

lpowell - your work on the GH1 patches was extremely useful and appreciated. You doing anything with the GH2?

thanks, Ian

You're joking right?

Some of the top "usual suspects" have been churning out MASSIVE amounts of test data with different hack variations in the recent days and weeks.
Results seem to be pointing to different "best settings" for different shoot applications.
However, everyone seems to be in agreement that even PROPERLY TUNED settings as low as 44MB are a very significant improvement.
There are a few threads on the first page here that will bring you up to date.

I'm delighted with the hacked GH2. I'm convinced it has the best IQ of all the hdslr's.

Almost bought the much cheaper GH13, mostly because of Blackout's samples shot with it.

Wonder if Blackout has gone with the GH2 also.

I think one issue I and others have run into is that there is no consolidated source for hack progress. I keep up with a few threads at personal-view.com and the threads here, but it's still hard to tell exactly what progress has been made and in what areas.

Are there any "properly tuned" settings that also allow spanning over 4GB?

Yeah, there's a lot of chat, but for those of us who want to avoid most of the techy stuff and get on with shooting with a high quality and robust setting, it's pretty difficult to make out what's what. The 66mbit setting seems to have disappeared, I've got the 132 and am thinking that may be the way to go, but it would be really great if someone would consolidate the current state of play for those of us who don't want to get our hands too dirty as advanced testers.

Ian- h,

how are you matching the af100 & gh1???

To be honest, I'm not. The only cases where I'm using them on the same shoot, I've got the GH1 in a Ewa-Marine water bag for surf shots, and there matching is hardly an issue. Matching the GH2 that I've just got and the AF might become more of a priority. The AF doesn't actually belong to me - it's a friend's here in Cape Town - and I guess I've been shooting about half my jobs on that cam lately. Do love it though. Much more flexible and 'pro' feeling in use than the GH range (somewhat obviously, I guess).

Brian:

Do you know if any of those patches support spanning files over 4GB? I would think this is a very desirable attribute for a patch.

Yes I believe cbrandin on Personal View has a patch that is called the 44mbps patch, I think. The 32mbps 24L setting in that patch has been successful. I also heard that Driftwood's 132mbps patch seems to be ok as well, but I personally can't vouch for it since I haven't used it.

Resolving to take this step. I sometimes need better 60i/720p performance than my GH2 offers in stock config.
