This is something that has been bugging me for a while, at fist it was pretty straight foward but now that I see more and more titles comes out on blu-ray
I am wondering something.....

most modern movies go through a digital intermediate and I am guessing that the blue ray disk is made from that correct?

now my real question is regarging these old titles like independance day, that did not have a DI and many years have passed, how do they make a blu ray print from this, do they have to go back to the original 35mm print and do a new scan in order to make the blu-ray??

Well, the studioes create digital masters of all their films for home video distribution. It has little to do with the DI-process. The masters were in HD resolution or higher even in the days of only DVD.

well take movies like "Ben-Hur" on those days there were no digital masters and the movie is coming out on blu-ray

Well in that case, the high quality digital restoration that had been done will now be seen in full quality, rather then down-rezzed back to DVD. It may not be HD in terms of what was originally shot, but you will now be able to see the full quality of the digital restoration.

The studioes have created digital masters for all their catalog titles as well. Usually when classics are released on a new format like Blu-ray, it is with a sparkling new master. So yeah, they go back to the original 35mm print, clean it up and scanned it in at 4k or 2k resolution.

You can learn more about this on the Godfather trilogy Blu-ray release, by the way.

in the case of older movies too such as blade runner and what not they take it through a 2 million dollar upconvert machine up to 4k. then the machine does its thang and removes film scratches, does frame interpolation increasing the resolution and quality. then it gets downconverted back down to 1080p for blu ray. it's a hefty scrubbing process, gotta be careful of what films you get on the blu too cuz sometimes they scrub too hard in the process and you actual lose information in the pixels and it just smooths it over. like in the case of pan's labyrinth it lost all it's contrasty feel and everybody looked like barby dolls. do your research before u buy...
