All-In-One Case/Bag Recomendation?

Hey all,

Looking for recommendations on a case or bag that I can take on wedding and event jobs for our HMC150, sound equipment and accessories.

Will need to fit the following

  • HMC150 (but with room to grow...)
  • at least 4 wireless units with lapel mics and cables.
  • Shotgun Mic
  • Zoom audio recorder
  • small camera light
  • audio cables
  • extra batteries and tripod plates
Currently sporting a Kata CC-196 bag in addition to a small sound bag, which is a little unmanageable for one guy who also needs to carry a tripod and slider! Still trying to decide if I should organize my audio equipment in the bag itself or get something big enough to fit my audio bag in. It would be nice if we could fit everything we need for a wedding into one case to limit setup time.

Anyway, looking forward to hearing what you recommend!

Thanks!

I have the older blue version of this - it fits most of my gear, though it looks ridiculous if you're a small guy like me. It's sturdy, has tons of space in the main compartment, has a sleeve and pocket for a laptop, and a couple other smaller pockets. I have my HMC150, 2 vocal condenser mics, 2 shotgun mics, 3 batteries, 2 chargers, cables, and an on-camera light. It's pretty packed in, but I can put in all those plus a laptop.

Better start doing your deadlifts if you plan to run with all that gear and a laptop + external drive!

I use a Kata Capsule-183 for my HMC150, 4 XLR cables, 2 lavs, 1 shotgun mic, H4N Handy Recorder, Marshall LCD50HDMI monitor, monitor arm, power supplies for camera & monitor, 4 batteries, memory cards, Comer1800 LED light + 2 batteries + 2 chargers, and a set of headphones.

The Capsule 183 is just a smidge bigger than your CC-196 (I have one of those at work with my HVX200 cams), but it has a lot more usable space.

I got the big rolling bag from Cool Lights... it comes with several dividers, but I sort of reconfigure it for different shoots. Generally I have a Tenba Air Case that holds my 150 and accessories, which I just stick in the roller, usually with a smaller audio bag, and a bag for my Marshall monitor and its cables, batteries, etc. Kind of ends up being a "rolling office"; I flip the lid open and my different gear is organized the way I'm used to in the smaller bags, and I can stick things like a slate, an iPad or a laptop in it. I don't have to pull those cases out, just flip 'em open. For things like music videos, I'll use it for big flo's and take the 150 bag or my big rolling DSLR case.

Maybe not the "usual" way of doing things but it keeps me very organized, and it rolls which I like. It was about $200, not bad for a really large case.

ThinkTank Photo - Airport Security v.20

We use the Airport Security v2.0 rolling case manufactured by ThinkTank Photo. One rolling case is just enough space for an HMC150, several extra batteries, an LED light kit, extra batteries for the LED, one shotgun mic (unattached from camera), three sets of wireless transmitters/receivers, variety of cables/adapters, several SD cards, and a roll of gaffers tape. The nice thing is that this rolls. So even if the bag gets heavy from all the equipment, it is still easy to transport the bag with little fatigue. It's probably one of the best investments we've made!! We used to have several shoulder bags to carry all our equipment.

Enjoy!

I went out and picked up a photographer's vest...it keeps most of the small things right next to me (batteries, cards, lavs, mp3 recorder,, cables etc etc) and I keep the bigger items like the cam itself and the shotgun in a separate bag...great for weddings/run and gun.

I use the Porta Brace DVO-2 for my HMC150 and a bunch of gear. Works just fine. Also recommend the bags from Digital Juice. They have "production bags" and "camera bags" which are similar, main difference usually being some kind of harness to hold your camcorder in the camera bags. But with all the gear you're stuffing in, you don't really need a harness to keep the camera from moving anyway.

Digital Juice usually puts their bags on sale for half off, around $150 or so, so keep an eye out for it, or go with the Porta Brace DVO-2 (or the DVO-3 if you want an even bigger bag)

As I mentioned earlier, Digital Juice occasionally discounts their production gear. Just got an e-mail today that their large camera bag is on sale for $169.95.

I can vouch for their gear. It's as robust as anything else you'd get - shy of a Pelican case. Of course, the case is much more versatile than a Pelican and has much more room than any comparably priced hard case would have.

Of course, being that it is very heavy duty stuff, there's a weight to it. I think the case is about 10 lbs by itself. And this is the larger case that's on sale today, so it'll easily hold all of your gear for a camera setup, probably even would accommodate an HMC150 on rails with a mattebox (dunno for sure, but you can check those measurements and see how large the thing is).
