1DC: All I Want is an Honest Camera

Turns out I have one ...

Huge amount of angst recently with the new announcements from Canon and Sony ... pick the lesser
of the crippled cameras or pay a years wages for something that needs a couple of blokes to wield in
the wild.

Weather in Texas has started to moderate ... spent the day with my old school 1DX III ... can a DSLR
satisfy one in video mode ...

No heat issues ... internal RAW .... good battery life ... with Gold mount option if needed.

AF? Naw ... just a great set of tools to nail focus manually ...

ND's ... 4x5.65 on a WC Zip Box

Nothing cinematic but for my needs more than adequate ...

Internal RAW 5.5 rendered as 4K DCI in DR Studio ... CLog 2 with Canon LUT

No preorders ... I am good with the limitations of this camera.

That started this exploration ...

No RAW ... not FF .... UGLY ... but looks like a great camera for production ...

I prefer an external audio recorder ... at times the ability to shoot stills ... hammer nails ....

C70 will be very successful ... which may be a shame in that it authenticates Canon's
product stratification ....

But DGO could be an asset ....

It's great you're happy with your 1DXIII but I don't really get this "cripple" slight that hovers around every Canon release. Perhaps there was a case for it a few years ago with the C200 omitting the C300mk2's broadcast codecs (I bought a couple anyway and it proved a non issue), but really in the last year or so with releases like the C5002, C3003 and C70, it's a pretty tough call to say these cameras are hobbled.

Super35 is a choice, not a limitation (personally I prefer it), and as for Raw surely you can't expect a manufacturer to offer every feature in every product at every price point?

I would prefer Raw over 10bit XFAVC, SDI over timecode, and an EVF over an LCD, but I can't say Canon is crippling the C70 because it doesn't have exactly what I want.

Cripple isn't in my view a slight ... just an observation of the stratification that Canon persists in maintaining. More so in the R5 R6 line ... but honestly the C70 lacks a number of codecs due to the SD card implementation ... wonder how much Canon saved over CFExpress cards.
The missing codecs may not matter to the end-user ... and honestly SD cards while inexpensive are old tech ... no excuse
for their incorporation in a camera that should be viable for 5 - 10 years going forward. C300III and C500II are pretty much without limitation
and will be long term winners .... for the corporate and higher end shooter.

If you are happy with Long GOP above 30 ... no RAW ... Super35 ... great.

Otherwise nothing to fault in the camera ... and my intention was not to fault any of the recent cameras ... just pointing out that the 1DX III can hold its own with the others ... if used within its limits. 5.5K RAW to 30 minutes ... 10 bit 422 ProRes HQ with unlimited times and no heat issues without fan to an external recorder. And truthfully not selling anything here ... just sharing personal observation ... which going forward I will be loathe to do.

Realistically the 1DX III is in a different tier than the C70 ... priced accordingly. But honestly it is one of the easiest video cameras I have used ... RED, Sony EX1R, multiple mirrorless included. DPAF and one of the most intuitive manual focus assists I have used.

DGO has an appreciably better DR but the 1DX III is clean enough at higher ISO and has such clean shadows to make it a marginal gain ... for my needs.

Super35 crop exists in the 1DX III ... along with FF.

I think the C70 will outsell the 1DX III 10 to 1 ... these days most are happy slapping a speed booster in front of a $2K piece of glass.

Rant over ...

Don't give in to the haters. Using the term as an example not as a judgement. I have a C200 and enjoyed reading what you like about your camera. I'm not a camera Nazi myself.

I am eyeing an R5, maybe a year, or post pandemic, which would be closer to what you have. I really like RAW video in a SLR form factor.

I apologize if I intimated that lacuna was out of line for sharing his or her thoughts on the Canon ecosystem.

Just wanted to clarify my intent in sharing ...

Thanks for affirming my posts ... I think that the R5 ... especially the 8K is compelling if you can use it to fill
a spot alongside a workhorse like the C200.

Coming from a background of large and medium format landscape photography ... I was confused when I first picked up a EX1R
and learned that a string of JPGs was the best it could do ... RAW in the RED One and original EPIC was more akin to my photography.
That bias has persisted to this day.

Best element of the CRM files is they can be rendered as CLog-2 files in Davinci Resolve.

It is so interesting that we have this deluge of great cameras and most have little work due to the pandemic.

I am blessed in that all of my work is pro-bono and in lock-down my church has never had a greater need for content.

Not at all, I thought your response was just fine :-)

I'm with you on the XFAVC - I've moved from the C200 to C300mkIII and I'd be loathe to lose CRL. I'm not sure about the C70 as a b-cam at the stage as I really much prefer CRL files. I'd already ordered a BMPC6k before the C70 was announced (which has a bunch of limitations but shoots Braw) so I'm going to see how well I can get it to match the C300mkIII as a b-cam indoors before deliberating further on the C70.

Personally I think the product stratification is about right at the moment. They've given the C70 80-90% of the C300III's features in a compact package at half the price (in some ways, AF, power consumption, RF mount, it's even better).

1DXIII footage looks great, and if you're happy with external NDs and two system sound then it makes perfect sense.
