Looks like the Scott brothers (Ridley and Tony) are going to co-produce an ALIEN prequel that will be directed by one of their proteges, commercial director Carl Rinsch.

As a huge fan of the first two Alien films, and an admirer of the the third one, I'm not thrilled to hear this because I think it will be a very hard film to get right, especially with Alien vs. Predator tainting it. It also has added pressure to live up to the first two even since it is going to be a prequel. Call me crazy, but I'm tired of prequels/remakes/reboots. I suppose with Star Trek raking in the dough, prequels and more reboots will be even hotter than ever with the studios. At least from what these articles are saying, this new Alien will not be an outright remake of the first film.
I guess I am sorta bummed a bit too, because it has always been a dream of mine to eventually make it as a writer and then land the job of writing an Aliens sequel that could be a new story alongside the existing films. I have a few really good Aliens ideas which I won't go into now. Suffice to say, if you've read the first three Dark Horse comic book Aliens series (Book One, Two, and Earth War) where the aliens spread all over the Earth, then that is a good indicator of what type of territory my version would occupy.
As for what made the first three films was, with the exception of Ripley, it was all about new characters discovering the aliens for the first time and trying to survive. Even in the second film this dynamic held in place with Ripley since she still feared the alien as it haunted her dreams. Of course, Aliens also introduced a new alien creature too. Add to that, the shift from one alien to a whole bunch of them was a big enough shift to keep Ripley from feeling safe even in the company of the Colonial Marines. By the third film she was a little more jaded/experienced with killing these creatures, but we still had a whole bunch of new characters that were encountering HR Giger's beautiful abomination for the first time. Also, the threat of only one alien didn't seem big enough after Aliens. I think that by the fourth film the Ripley arc has been worn out, no matter how awesome a performance Sigourney Weaver can deliver. Plus that film was just a bit too silly. It was if they weren't even trying to make a tense and terrifying sci-fi/action/horror film.
This series needs new characters, a whole new start, not a prequel. The aliens use human or other alien species' bodies as a host. There isn't a need for character continuity in this series. Doing a prequel undercuts the specialness of the first film being the first human encounter with these creatures (technically AvP was a prequel for the Alien series and look how that one turned out). Aliens was the obvious extension of the one alien hunting down the crew plot. Alien 3 didn't completely work for me in large part because it felt like they were trying to do the first film again, only with a radically different visual palette. I don't see anywhere else to go but with multiple creatures ala Aliens. The mystery and mood of the first film can't be redone. The only sequel of the whole franchise to favorably compare to the first film (and some would argue is even better) was Aliens.
