AJA introduces Cion 4K camera $8,995!

I feel like there are too many "pro shooters" out there. It's funny how tech advances allow everyone with enough money to pretend they're a pro for a while, because, you know, 4K and all

Surely
pro = someone pays you
Full time pro = all income from shooting
Part time pro = percent of income from shooting

Kit used doesn't matter. If someone hands over $s then it's a pro job.
Alexa owner not being paid to shoot = rich amateur/hobbyist (nice life!).

firstly anyone who edits anything for $ 5 is destroying the industry they are seeking to enter, this isn't a new thing though and you do get what you pay for.

Back to the AJA I like the idea of this camera a lot, not sure why the headphone jack is on the top - using this camera in weather could be an issue but a custom porta brace cover could fix that. I can work around the lack of NDs with my matt box. I'd rather spend my money on the new fujinon 17-120 lens so a camera for 9 k is a great deal.

yeah, the camera is definitely not sealed. We talked about that and they said it wasn't a design goal. You need a cover if there's a hint of rain. I also asked about the fan noise. It was pretty noisey in the room there so it was hard to tell whether the fan was noisey or not but they were proud of how they "isolated" the fan such that it's mounted, sort of floating, so that it would not resonate through the body then they tried different speeds. Higher would whir and lower would resonate. So they kept going till they got it really quiet. It has some different modes for high heat outside and quiets during recording. Anyway, I couldn't hear it but as I said it was noisey in that room.

I'm with you, at 9K, it looks like a really good value.

Yaargh, I think cameramakers should find a way to make them fanless or not at all. I know, easier said than done, and I can't quite detect a pattern between cameras that have fans and those that don't.

Oops. I meant the room was noisey not the fan so it was hard for me to tell how quiet it was. I coudn't hear the fan at all while it was running. I think with all the processing going on with all that data at those bit rates, that they need the fans now.

That's just a weird way to look at an industry. You don't destroy anything by offering your services at market prices. This young man has created his own on the job training, or internship type program that actually pays him, even if it's just $5 bucks. I'm sure someone like Thelma Schoonmaker is not in the least bit threatened by this, nor should she or any talented editor be threatened by new people learning the craft.

If and when this 19 year has the experience and talent of a world class award winning editor I'm sure he won't charge $5 bucks anymore.

ProRes is one of the easiest codecs. The Panasonic DMC-GH4 does more work, recording at higher frame rates, in MPEG-4, yet has no fan, probably due to the use of an ASIC.

fujinon 17-120 lens so a camera....
I think you mean the Canon 17-120mm CineServo zoom....

That's interesting. Do you think that the GH4 is really doing more processing work? I would have thought that with these pro output formats that the Cion would have a lot more to do.

That used to be the standrd definition (pardon the pun), though I think in a world where everyone calls themselves whatever they like and drive down rates to do it, for me Professional = someone who gets paid professional rates.

CION - looking forward to seeing the images. Looks like a very usable camera.

I think I would. I loved the look of the footage I saw at Able Cine last week. Blew me away -organic, rich, beautiful. Plus it's less than half the price of an f5 (if you meant buy, you said choose). I like the F5 but I'd get this for the value.

AJA Cion vs. Sony FS700 (+ Odyssey 7Q with Sony 4K raw option + SSD discs) would be a very interesting thing. Both cameras can work at 120FPS and price is very similar. Also Canon C300 will needs some upgrade to 10bit 422 2K output (60p or 120 FPS with quick motion) in its price level.

AJA Cion can helps with this.

To demonstrate our progress with CION, we have created a short video showcasing some of the abilities of the camera: pleasing skin tone rendition alongside rich, vibrant colors, amazing levels of picture detail from the high resolution sensor, a lack of “black sun” artifacts and in-camera slow-motion.

The following link allows you to view our latest CION video:

Please be aware that this footage has not been color corrected or graded in any way. It has only been edited. We felt you would want to see exactly what the camera is capable of delivering “straight out of the box” without any additional post-production modifications.

The AJA CION will not be shipping immediately, but it will be shipping soon. We are working hard to deliver the best product we possibly can.

Thank you for your interest in the AJA CION. We look forward to delivering the camera to you as soon as possible.

Thanks for showing you´re still out there! I guess you were waiting for IBC for giving new info to the public and I hope this "old school" marketing plays out well for you in the end.
Really liking what I see, besides using leather for the shoulder pad, I hope there will be an option to changing this out to a durable, modern and non-toxic material.
It would help to know what the exact "out of the camera" settings you used where, since this clearly isn´t a flat/log image a lot of people here are interested in.
Especially the shot of the sun through the wire fence, makes me wonder a bit about DR of the camera.

Obviously in part depends on how the camera is set up and the look you're going for, but this promo certainly is pretty in your face, contrasty, punchy colours and a bit harsh to me. Total opposite to the recent Varicam promo. Not to say that the Cion can't do that other look, we'll see.

I like the Cion look better. I"m a big fan punchy, colorful, contrasty. Just preference and a matter of grading I'm sure.

Video looks perfect.

I'm surprised this is ungraded. It is precisely the look I want.

On top of that, it's global shutter. 12 stops of dynamic range. I know other cameras have more stops, but around 12 is enough for me to play with. Also from what I've seen, a lot of the difference in look can be accounted for by the deftness of the cameraman and editor. Witness these clips from Digital Bolex, also rated at 12: https://vimeo.com/98930327, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7vJPgw6p4A. Or this footage from the Blackmagic 4K, which has the same sensor as the Cion: https://vimeo.com/95423171
