HPX250: AJ-PX270 new youtube video

Nice to see your Jan. The PX270 certainly looks like a great offering from Panasonic. Is there any hope of 720p120 coming to the PX270? Sort of like 1080p60 was added to the AC160?

Am I wrong to think 1080p60 and 720p120 have equal data rates? Thanks.

Jan, do you know an approx. availability date? (Already pre-orded it on B&H to replace my 250.)

Also, I emailed pbtscservice@us.panasonic.com and asked, "-Can you "feather" the zoom on the 270, a gradual start stop instead of abrupt start stop like HVX, HPX and all other Panasonic cameras with non-interchangeable lenses?" and was answered "yes".

Really, is this true as it is hard to believe in this form factor???

The camera that you are talking about is the AJ-PX5000 which is the big brother to the AJ-PX270. The PX270 has the menu structure of the Shoulder Mount Cameras.

Hello Jan!
I was thinking more of an HPX370 replacement. The 5000 is in another price category altogether.

Date for delivery is the end of march, and the list price on the camera is $6495. The zoom can be very slow or very fast. 22X lens, 180 seconds from beginning to end and as fast as 2 seconds. And the top thumb rocker can do the variable speed as well.

:-)

Not sure at this time. Sorry but there are areas that are still a little sketchy and I would be guessing and I hate it when I do that.

Hi Jan. Thanks for your input here. I have just a few questions if you have a moment. We are looking at replacing our old workhorses, 2 x HMC150's, with 2 of these guys. I'm still trying to wrap my head around your 180 seconds to zoom all the way comment. Wow! That's awesome.

My three questions are:

1) How does it compare in it's low light performance compared to the HMC150's...and how about compared to the AC160a's? Our HMC's have been pretty good, but I'm well aware of several other smaller sensor cameras out there that are much better in dim conditions.

2) Does it have the same focus distance readout in feet that our HMC's have? While things like peaking really help, I've always relied on this readout and it's served me well. Granted, the LCD looks like it's gonna be a huge help in and of itself. :)

3) How is the stabilization? I remember reading some of your raves about the AC90's stabilization, how does this compare? At 22x zoom I would imagine this starts to get important.

Thanks Jan.

Hopefully reading this took you less than 180 seconds. ;)

It is a new chipset, and thus better than the AC160. Our engineer was getting 11 stops of dynamic range out of it.

I think so but will double check the next time I see one, maybe toward the end of this week.

I didn't try it. Sorry. And it was a prototype anyhow. Those sorts of things get tweaked all the time in development, but I didn't even think to turn it on.

Hopefully reading this took you less than 180 seconds. ;)

:-) I come back later with the other answers.

Best,

Jan

Great! The HMC's I "think" got about 9 stops of dynamic range so this should be a HUGE improvement. I'm hoping/assuming it will handle noise better too as you increase gain than the HMC150s??

Great. Thank you for your time. Look forwad to those answers!

That focus distance readout has been such an important part of how we shoot. With just 2 HMC's I've built a 6 figure wedding video company and now it's time to re-load my equipment so two of these PX270s should be a perfect upgrade...mixed with one GH4+Interface Unit. Really excited for this!

One more thing...

You mentioned the crazy, insane, awesome 180 seconds it takes when zooming slowly from full wide to full telephoto. Is that such a long time because the zoom is slower, or because it's just longer than other cams. I forget how long the AC160's zoom took at it's slowest speed since I only used it once.

Thanks again.

I didn't test the AC160, but the HPX250 has (I believe) the same lens, and it takes about 30 seconds to go from full wide to full telephoto, using the top handle zoom set in the low position. So if the PX270 takes six times longer then yeah, that's a pretty slow creep zoom...

You could take a look at the HPX600. It is quite the nice camera with lots of features and a real step up from the HPX370.

I have, and the 600 is a sweet camera. I'd love to have one, although the PX270 is more in my budget range. It seems the 270 offers more control and customization over the image than the 600, is this correct? One's an AG, the other's an AJ.

Six times longer! That's perfect!

I don't know why I overlooked this camera when it was first announced. It's too bad the promo video's voiceover is so cheesy because this camera appears to be sensational:

1080p60 Long GOP at 50Mbps (and much higher data rate if you don't need longer recording times)
3g-SDI Out
10 bit 4:2:2 internally
22x zoom
SLOW Zoom that takes 180 seconds from start to finish if you want (which I do!)
Top of the line LCD with 1.56M dots
Top of the line OLED EVF
Micro P2 slots!
Approx 12 stops of Dynamic Range (as described earlier in this thread)
Built in Flash Band Compensation which is awesome for events with tons of flashes
Newly designed lens (according to the panasonic brochure on it's preliminary specs)
Newly developed sensor

I would imagine this is close to the pinnacle of what a 1/3" sensor camera can offer for HD shooting. I do wish it had some sort of 4k expansion capability given this is shaping up to be the year that 4k bleeds into the market, but those specs alone are all a killer package.

I'd be interested to know if DRS works in all modes, especially 1080/30P. (I've been using the AG-HPX250 since it was released and the DRS doesn't work in 1080.)
