Airplane footage

Hello,

First, just wanted to say, great job on this site. I run my own website/forum for giant scale r/c so I know what it takes to make it happen...

Ok, so as I said, I film giant scale r/c airplanes. Here's an example and here. Just a hobby/passion. Nothing as fancy as what you all are doing, but I'm tryin'.

I currently use a dvx-100b, and AB Stasis unit. The only good thing I can say about it, is the battery lasts a long time. My big problem is shooting straight up. It's a back killer... And when some of these guys fly, they fly fast. The other problem is I want to be able to move around. I really like the looks of the steadicam or glidecam units. But I don't think I will be able to shoot straight up in the air from what I have seen. Am I correct in this assumption. I hope you guys tell me I wrong and that these units are perfectly suited to my application.

Assuming I am correct and given the type of footage and criteria I have described above, what would you all recommend to save my back and stabilize what I shoot.

Steadicam can be balanced to hang at any angle, tilting directly up is not a problem for any unit. Though it could be a little tiring with the Merlin. The Steadicam Pilot would work well though.

Mikko, thanks for the quick response. The problem is one minute the plane could literally have the wing tips 2" off the ground and 10 seconds later it could be 500 feet in the air directly overhead. I have actually been looking at the Glidecam x-10 and 4000 pro. Do you think this system will handle everything I will encounter?

Are you actually going to be moving sround yoruself, or are you just looking for a camera mount that allows a large pan & tilt range?

Actually both... Most of what I do will be filmed like the first video I linked to above, but with a stabilizer and the ability to move around.... well I guess I want my cake and eat it too...

Creatively there is a LOT I could do with something like the Glidecam but I need the pan and tilt features too. Maybe a better question to ask is what are the limitations of the glidecam/steadicam vest units in that regard?
