AG-UX180 sample footage - run & gun interviews, mixed lighting.

Here is some sample footage from the UX180 in Ultra HD, from an event I recently covered: https://youtu.be/Bc9cmli1emY

Color is straight out of the camera, no tweaks.
Footage was shot in scene file 1, original settings.

I am happy with how the camera performed, considering the extreme mixed lighting. I used an on-camera led for some of the interviews.
I think it handled the low-light scenes well, and I had no problem getting the depth of field to go a little shallow when I wanted it to.

Thanks for posting. Overall, this is nice looking footage. The lower light sections are clean and better than I expected. I like the look of this footage more than anything I have seen from the DVX-200. The colors look nice and detail is strong. I do get more of a "video-y" feel from the image? Even though the footage is in 30p it has a bit an interlaced feel or hyper-present feel. Just an overall impression. Sort of like the way the JVC LS300 looks. Odd but there imho. Is this an offshoot of 4k detail? I don't know but this was never a Panasonic attribute and I do not see it with my PX270.

I wonder if they will pursue a P2 version of this camera?

I think I know what you mean. My past Panasonic cameras had a "texture" to the image, the footage was not highly detailed. This camera shows plenty of detail, so yeah, might be the 4K causing what you're seeing.

I was wondering if the UX180 would let me sell my C100 MKII, but no. The C100 definitely has a more cinematic look, which I like for certain projects. But I don't like using the C100 for shoots like the one above. It feels clumsy and slow.
The UX180 was perfect for this type of shoot.

I agree. Your shoot was a perfect fit for that style of camera. I absolutely love my PX270 camera. The image is just what I want in a video camera. The only way I would move up would be if Panasonic replicated the look in a 4k60p camera with P2.

It is tough to replace the motor servo style cameras for live events. I think 20x zoom with a 1" low noise sensor is the best happy medium.

Really nice work. I've been scratching my head and experimenting with scene files on the HC X1 to avoid blown out highlights, but will switch back to scene 1 and experiment some more.

The camera looks darn nice for the price. What were your settings on the ice sculpture at night and crowd shots in the evening.

I can't recall the night crowd settings, but gain was at either 6db or 12db. When the guy is sitting next to the ice sculpture it was at 12db.
YouTube compression masks the noise in that scene, but even when watching the raw footage, the noise is more than acceptable, you'd only notice it if you're looking for it. Wouldn't be distracting to the viewer.

Thnx, good to know. I have yet to pull the trigger one and as you said this is a good camera for that style of shooting. Were you in High Sense mode as well during the night scenes?

Were you in High Sense mode as well during the night scenes?

Funny thing regarding High Sens mode...
In my testing, I found that High Sens mode raised the sensitivity and exposure exactly as 6db does when not in High Sens mode, but with a little more noise.

So I keep High Sens mode off, and have my L/M/H gain presets set at -3db, 6db, 12db.
So in essence, 6db is like being at 0db in HI SENS mode, but with less noise.

I just received my AG-UX180 and am going through the included hand booklet which is very small (hard for my old eyes to read.) I was able to download a free Barry Green book on the 180 and would now like to buy the book paper version. Does anyone know where to order the book from?

bill-

thank you for the uploaded footage.

the footage was pretty darn good considering the 1" chip. colors were vibrant, skintones looked dead on.

even the 12db ice sculptor shots at night looked fine.

yes, there is a "video-y" quality to the footage.

would that be slightly diminished at 24p?

how would your shoot compare if you used a comparable gh5 as to ease of shoot and footage?

again, thanks for the share.

be well.
