AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

I think it looks nice on my Apple monitor. I watched at the highest res. Very natural look. Was all the light from the window? Did you check it with the Waveform? If so where were the peak levels?

That was about 85% artificial light and very little outdoor light. I'm still fairly old school and I still use a Lowel lighting kit that I bought about ten years ago. For that shoot I used two lights, a Lowel Omni off to the right with a daylight correction filter on it shooting through an umbrella. Off to the left and further back was a Lowel Tota which is much brighter, also with a filter on it shooting though an umbrella. I typically use those lights pointing away from the talent and using the umbrellas as a reflector for nice soft light. For some reason it looked better to me to do the opposite on that day. The drawback was the harsher shadows when the people were gesturing. I was taught by an old director that always told me "light for the camera, not for your eyes".

I only glanced at the waveform one time just for a quick check and at his time I can't tell you much about what I remember seeing. My previous cameras did not have a waveform monitor in them so that's something I still need to tackle. I use a Sekonic L-478DR light meter 90% of the time on locked down shots. I'll probably contnue to use my meter and get comfortable comparing what the meters says to the waveform that I get when using the meter's settings. Eventually I'll kick off the training wheels but I typically never get bad results relying on my meter.

You must be smarter (and better looking) than me. I have 2 IPADs. BOth get the same error, incorrect password when trying to connect to the dvx200. I am using the usb stick they recommend. I have checked, changed, poked at and prodded the password, network setup, user setup, etc. etc. Perhaps when they come out with the next firmware version, they will make this workable for us meer mortals.

What HW version is the USB stick you are using. It should be listed on the box.

Is there any reason why DVXuser still haven't got a specific DVX200 thread?
Seem very odd that with 267 pages it still doesn't deserve it's own space. Who is in charge of starting specific camera model threads here?
Thanks

+1 to that. Moderators - so many pages in one thread is very difficult to digest for a newcomers, interested with this camera!

Hi guys, I was able to make it to my office today and spend some time putting together a You Tube video showing how to make the AG ROP iPad app work with the DVX200.

Before I started, I deleted the app from my iPad and cleared all of the network settings from the DVX200. I wanted to show the configuration process from beginning to end. I gotta say, after 5 or 6 tries while shooting the video I was not able to get it to work again. It was really frustrating for a while and I found myself scratching my head. Eventually I figured out what the problem was.

Everything that I've said earlier in this thread about how to make this work....FORGET IT. I went back up into the thread and changed the text in the procedure that I wrote up to read something like "See my post further down in this thread for information on how to connect the AG ROP app to the DVX200".

Let's start all over again....

I think I finally stumbled onto the reason as to why everyone is having problems getting this to work. I think it has to do with a bug in Panasonic's firmware in the camera and/or the programming of the AG ROP app. With that being said, for now this should get you up and running in about 15 minutes.

First I should say that there is another video on You Tube that shows a guy speaking Italian who had this working and he briefly touches on a few parts of the configuration. Unfortunately I didn't find it to be as simple as he appears to make it look. I think he accidentally got it working just like I did a few days ago after hours of messing around with it. One piece of what he said helped me get to the bottom of this problem.

About two minutes into his video where he's showing one of the screens, he says something about the password but being that I don't speak Italian I couldn't understand exactly what he was saying. I had a friend that speaks Italian interpret that sentence for me. He said something about the password needing to be 10 characters. I think the one that he was referring to was the wifi password. The other day when I had mine working I was using 10 characters for my wifi password but today while recording the video even though I had 10 characters in my wifi password it still wouldn't work. The only thing that I was doing differently today was using a different username.

After recording that part of the video 5 or 6 times and it failing each and every time, I remembered that the username that I was using the other day when it was working for me just happened to have 10 characters in it. It's a common username that I use for some other stuff and I didn't want to show that username in the video because it has my name in it. For the heck of it I picked a completely different username that I hadn't tried before which was made up of 10 characters. I also continued to use a password of 10 characters. It worked on the very first try!!! So it seems like if you use a username of 10 characters, a password of 10 characters and a wifi password of 10 characters it connects every time without fail. That's REALLY strange but for me it works perfectly as you'll see in the video.

Here is the link to my You Tube video where I show the entire configuration process in detail. It works, but something still isn't exactly right with the ability to display and play thumbnails. All other features seem to work fine. With the lack of documentation from Panasonic on this setup it's hard to say if maybe something else needs changed in the camera to get the thumbnails to work or if there is still some programming changes on their end that need some attention. Have fun!

great work! But frankly, all of your hard work should be done by Panasonic! By the way, does this app only work with Apple? Panasonic should offer this for Apple AND Android world! Marketshare for Android is 83%

What an embarrassing launch. Good on Panny for trying to make a breakthrough camera but my goodness this launch is about as bad as I have seen.

Yes, this industry does not have the best track record when you look at how it behaves. The Red Scarlet fiasco, the Black Magic release dates and the general trend of announcing way early then muddling through the release for months after as Panny's last couple of cameras have done.

The industry is definitely working on a delay these days.

There is also a more basic version of this device that I believe the main difference is that your connection to the web is only wireless and not both wired and hard wired like the above listed device.

Hi, here is a clip filmed on the DVX, the camera was using 1.25 firmware and the default profile, no colour correction was applied. The GV shots were filmed on a GH4

There are 2 other interviews on their youtube channel. I think the skintones look great, especially on the original edits

Thanks for posting. I still see what appears to be smoothing going on with the skin. Anybody else notice this? Can it be stopped with settings?

Hi Andy, I think it looks fine. I'm impressed that the highlights on the faces seemed to hold up pretty well without getting blown out considering that the talent was that close to the window. You must have had your lighting balanced very well. I'm not a fan of any of the default scenes but I'd say if that was the factory scene 1 then it held up a little better than I would have expected. Maybe I need to reconsider that as an option on a future shoot.

Hi, the lighting was a little tricky, there was no where to film apart from the dressing room for the photo shoot, no where to get any depth, the other interviews are later in the day. The lighting was 2 x aperture 672 (the variable colour ones). On the original footage the smoothing of the skin is not present and the other 2 interviews look brighter in the original, they were delivered as edius mp4's at 12m and uploaded by my client
