AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

I have no idea what they may find possible to implement on the X1000; I just know that historically, they really haven't done that type of thing. They haven't traditionally gone back in after the fact and added a bunch of features through firmware; they did it once on the AC160 (added 1080/60p recording to it) and they added a number of features to the AC90 when it was replaced by the AC90A, so ... there's some precedent, but in general, no, it's just not something they normally do so I wouldn't expect it. If it shows up, hey, nice surprise, but -- it's not been their typical pattern. Now, there have been some cases where they've pre-announced that a feature would be added to a camera (like on the HPX300, they released it with a note that Flash Band Compensation would be added; on the PX270 they released it and promised future frame rate/codec combinations that weren't in the launched version) so I consider that a different thing, that's not adding new features, that's fulfilling a promise made to the customer. As far as I know there are no unfulfilled feature promises on the HC-X1000, so I wouldn't expect any new features to be added to it.

He appears to like the camera
He had the focus on the wrong thing when filming Sebastion Weigartner. It's more on things behind him (IMO).

Hands on first look from yesterday's press event in the UK. Hints of limitations with low lights or perhaps IQ (not sure as everything phrased indirectly). Some irritations with layout and functions (functions disappear on screen after few seconds, have to be assigned to function button, or wipeout other screen info).

The review is almost damming with faint praise and hints at niche use, not the universal application we hoped for.

Final judgment reserved until they have had unit for a future test.

No cause for panic as this is yet another case of Pannie giving cameras to shooters without proper instruction on how to optimize image. Why do they consistently do this?

"ADMIN" makes his first impresion's from the same viewing as "HD Warrior", you see footage of him at 3:40, so I guess you can say, "each to their own".

if this cam is a "GH4 in camcorder form", shouldnt we see a very GH4 look from it? The GH4 footage i have seen looks very nice (never used one personally), but DOF aside, even that recent DVX stuff (the interviews in video above) still looks just ok to me.

To me - totally unscientific - it looks like white balance is supported additionally with a desaturation of grey tones (something I do manually quite often in Photoshop) and the amplification of skin tones (the latter ones not always hitting the mark). GH4 definitely still looking (or rather "feeling") better.

The interviews were filmed in 1080p at 6Dbs, so it's not really showing off the full potential of the camera. I agree the skin tones look off, but considering the mixed lighting in the frame (tungsten, daylight, fluorescent, and LED on camera), I wouldn't put much stock in that evaluation.

There is plenty of bad GH4 footage out there as well. when the GH3 was first announced there was a lot of horrible amateur footage out there with early firmware versions.

You really have to factor in the kind of people behind the camera. sure cameras are a lot easier to use today but talent is still king when it comes to getting the most out of a camera. A good cinematographer will be able to get a great image out of the GH4 because those kind of people are using the GH4. Right now its been a bunch of journalists and bloggers who have shot with the DVX200 so yeah there is a huge difference in talent there.

Give a disposable camera to a award winning photographer and they will still create art. Give a $4,000.00 DSLR with a $3,000.00 lens to my dad and it will still look like garbage. Talent makes the image sing.

This was my thought as well... some of those shots had tungsten on one side of the face, daylight on the other, LED of unknown quality head on, plus whatever was lighting the room as a whole. Plus he had all of, what, 15 minutes with the camera before shooting the interview?

It's actually a new sensor (the same as in GX8) and, from Barry's resolution tests, DVX200 has more resolution in 4K too due to oversampling (12.9 MPX vs. 8.8).

It is not the GH4 sensor, it's the next generation after the GH4 sensor. And the DVX200, as is, doesn't use the same scene settings as the GH4 does (Natural, Smooth, etc). Once the color science is finished in the DVX200, I'll try to get ahold of a GH4 and see how closely they can be matched, so that you can deliver GH4-looking footage if that's what you want. But I do hope that people will share their favorite GH4 settings (and that there's some consensus) so I have a fixed target to aim at in trying to match the DVX200 to it.

But the staged drama gun battle piece used controlled lights and showed the same red highlighting on faces. I would argue that it is the camera, but could change momentarily.

That was also shot using a mixture of existing daylight, overhead fluorescents, and LED panels, so hard to say really if the camera was at fault.

I love this camera, and really want one, and my only major complaint is that there is not a single example of good face tones except the 10 bit 4:2:2 Shogun sample. So it seems that the camera sensor works fine, and that the problem is in the firmware's internal codec processing. The shogun processes externally and that sample did not show the red face blooms.

Correctable with firmware? Of course. But we have to admit that at this moment the Emperor has no clothes. Talking about the great closet of clothes that he has back at the castle does not cloth him as he stands in front of us.

I shoot in mixed conditions with C100s and do not get this face blooming effect. Strange color casts but not this red blooming on the face.

I really am not trying to be negative, and want this camera to work out, both with color and sensitivity, but as Barry has pointed out purchases should not be based on faith but demonstrated ability to do a specific job.

that would be smart, but it is honestly very hard when people keep posting things and calling them REVIEWS, a term we generally associate with finished products. Your favorite critic doesnt post a review of the rough cut of the upcoming star wars, or Muse's next album while theyre still tracking, or Stephen King's rough draft of his next novel, so what the hey, people?

So then, how about we wait for it to actually be released and make a judgement at THAT time?

IMO a movie trailer is almost the same, you instantly start to speculate.
From what I've seen of the new Star Wars movie so far I'm starting to have doubts about it. Just because its going to be made with life size models and people with masks and makeup like the first 3 movies, as apposed to CGI like the last 3, doesn't mean it will be a good movie, and I'm sure there have been forums talking about it ever since it was mentioned, and new threads started with every trailer.

How do you know that the manufacturers (of everything) don't find all this ums and ahs, good and bad, do and don't, like and dislike the sound of (on a speculative thread) helpful?

As much as I'd like to believe they might, I seriously doubt anyone from Panasonic takes the time to monitor a thread like this. They used to have a rep (Jan) who not only read the forums, but kept everyone up-to-date on the latest news, and provided helpful info and clarification through her intelligent comments and feedback. Sadly, those days are gone. However, Barry and a few others obviously provide feedback directly to Panasonic about any real and relevant issues discussed here. And Barry does his best to keep us informed and aware of the facts. Thanks, Barry.

I'm all in with those who feel a lot of the discussion here is premature until actual production cameras are available. But speculation and misinformation has become rampant ever since our I-want-it-now culture has totally lost sight of any appreciation of the concept of delayed gratification. Thank you Twitter. Guess I'm showing my age. :)

What we are doing here is more akin to [insert favorite movie critic here] posting a full review based solely off the trailer.
