AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

I haven't spent much time in FHD 50mbit. I can tell you that FHD 100mbit looks better than all-i 200mbit; it retains more detail.

Yes; downconverted QHD retains more sharpness than the native 1080 recording. The native recording is still way hella sharper than an AF100, and looks like genuine sharp HD. Recording in native HD also gives you many additional benefits like i.Zoom, 5-axis image stabilization, and reduced skew in 24p/30p. But, if recording in QHD and downconverting in post, the resulting footage will be sharper, and also will benefit by converting to 10-bit 4:4:4. So there's advantages to doing it each way.

Thank you. But the 100mbps mode is only for 60p right? So are you only comparing 60p footage?

i have to say, and again sorry to bait the flames, but I have see a funky "greyness" to all the skin tones Ive seen so far, or at least in all the Japan footage. anyone know what i mean? I dont know how else to describe it. sorta reminds me of what the XL2 would do on certain settings.

yeah, the grey blotches on the little girls face in one of the videos is puzzling. are these people that have been posting videos online with this PP camera really that incompetent? i haven't noticed the grey in all of the videos but I'm thinking it might be more of a result of panny's LOG mode.

Don't you think that those sort of videos could be a case of, "that's how I wanted it to look!"...

If it wasn't they could say, "I tried to do _____ , but could only get ______ , but it is only a test demo after all".

How would you ever know unless the maker of the video tells you otherwise?

I suggested some thing's to a person the other day, on a film i wasn't really the fan of the way it looked. They told me that they love to get other people opinions and suggestions, but they also like to try different things, and in this case it was the look they were after.

The data rate on that last video was ~3.5mb/s. It was shot at 24p and 60p in 4k, which means the original bitrates were either 100mb/s or 150mb/s. It's also been compressed twice (once for upload, then again by Youtube). My guess is that's how it was supposed to look, but something got lost in translation a time or two between the edit and what you see on Youtube.

thanks. i worry the same...again i will point to other users who have posted samples of their own work on proven cams like the c100 or gh4...even though we're talking about heavy youtube or vimeo compression, THOSE videos STILL look good!

and i must also point out that i am rooting for this cam so hard...price, features, cheap media, versatility. but none of that means anything if the images make you "has a sad."

Oh yeah. . .the short film? Forgot about that amongst all the Japan footage. Need to give it a second look.

straight from the camera with no color correction as opposed to V Log on most Japanese press junket samples which required correction without a suitable LUT being available. It is possible but entirely unproven that your criticism of the camera is really a criticism of the early prototype of V Log.

I hope so my friend!

Looked at the short film again (hint, a lot easier to find just going to Youtube and searching "DVX200" than trying to find the link on here!). Maybe I'm just looking for issues but I still see some funkitude in the skin tones, especially on the woman. Not the "greyness", but still a quality I don't quite like.

Yes, I know still the prepro model etc, still worrisome.

I will probably get strung up to the nearest lamp pole for saying this but having shot C Log on C100s I found it too hard to nail face color color correction so I switched to other gammas, mostly Wide DR. Not enough color there to work with at my skill level. Your mileage may vary. Traded a 12 stop DR gamma for a more easily gradable 11 stop gamma. My intuition is that I will do the same with the DVX200 as Barry indicates that Cine Like is 11 stops.

V Log on the Varicam is certainly better than on the DVX200, even ignoring the two stops extra DR, yet people act as they expect them to be the same.

Very interesting, a couple of practical concerns then, the lack of the white balance temperatures on the A/B presets is just odd. The viewfinder proximity sensor also would get annoying. Only small niggles which at this point won't stop me from a purchase, but lets hope they make these changes before release or soon after in firmware.

Another face at 1:32 of this video which not only looks odd in colour but smeared in detail. It's pretty obvious this camera is not up to the task making great looking faces. I also don't like the transition from light to dark in general from the DVX200.

Not one frame of footage that you guys have seen, has been from the version of the camera that has final color science. How do I know this? Because I just got the latest firmware, and it's STILL not final color science.

Furthermore, I know for a fact of at least one hardware change that is coming. And I know for a fact of certain issues in the color science that are due to be changed.

Simple fact is -- there should never have been a single frame of video released from this camera until the color science was ready, and -- preferably -- until the shooters had an adequate amount of time to get to learn to use the camera. Otherwise, we get the situation we have now, where guys like Osslund keep coming in here and just crapping on it, even though each and every observation that has been made so far has been made from unfinished, un-representative footage.

A month from now, the situation should be quite different. A month from now, there will be final-hardware, final-color-science units out in the field. A month from now, people may have actually had enough time to work with the camera that they figure out what works well and what doesn't. And a month from now, your opinions may all change. All I can say is -- opinions formed today on someone else's footage from an unfinished camera with unfinished color science by a shooter who didn't know how to work the camera, are not what I would be making my purchase decision based on.
