AG-DVX100B Review

The DVX100B works great.
I sold my DVX100A yesterday and rented a DVX100B until i get the HVX200.
The biggest improvement for me is the reduction of the noise in shadows, and truer colors.
It is not noise free, but i could immediately see the difference.
Also, i wish i had time to test it, but the image seems tighter, with more resolution, ...but i would have to test it. At least, this is my first impression. The image is more defined, clearer, more "alive". It also shows more details (and cleaner) in the shadows. The blacks are definiely better.

...not day and night, but definitely better to my eyes.

Good to hear. Mmmmm, i can't wait to get mine. How long do you think it'll be until there is a retail price drop? For example, B+H is selling the B for 3600 and the A for 3400 even though the list price is the same at 3999. I know the demand must be higher and I know that EVS and Abel are selling cheaper, but still not as cheap as the A was....

I just dont want to buy mine today for 3400 and seem 'em a month from now at 3200, even though i know that's the nature of electronics.

Someone care to forcast the pricing of the 100B? A price drop when the HVX comes out maybe?

Don't forget the B came out at a higher list price than the A.

???

DVX100A MSRP: $3995. DVX100B MSRP: $3995.

Do you mean the original to the A? Because the DVX100 was $3795, and the DVX100A was $3995...

In Barry and JArred's report they said there was a slight reduction in noise levels. This got me really excited. The guys over at dv.com have commented that it was quite sigificant enough to bring the 100B to the level of the xl2 and the pd170. This would be great for the events that I do. Can anyone confirm how clean the gain is? I can get away with 6db on the 100a which is quite significant to me. If the 100b is even cleaner yahoo!

Regarding all the changes they made I'm tempted to get the upgrade. Alot of people said going from the 100 to the 100a wasnt that big a deal but for events I actually found the focus assist a godsend and the knee in the gamma curves were very useful to prevent blowouts. Interesting enough people who have both the 100 and 100a say that the 100 is a fair bit less noisy.

Just want to confirm that cleaning tape is not included with DVX100B. There is only one Panasonic AY-DVM63MQ tape.

translumination,

I had the DVX100, and the DVX100A, and now rented a DVX100B until i get the HVX.

The A is the noisiest in Cinelike D, but it has a better highlight compression than the original DVX.
The original DVX is in the middle (maybe because it doesn't have the Cinelike D).
The B is the cleanest of all 3. ...and the image looks tighter, looks like it has more definition (not scientifically tested), smoother. The shadows have more details.

But it is not as clean as the Xl2. The XL2 is absolutely clean.

100%, no cleaning cassette.

Barry might influence that if he does a DVX v. HVX SD shoot out. I for one would love to see that article. The HVX has an awful lot of SD functionality that the DVX does not have and will probably never have.

Oh, yeah - that's what I want to see, and I think a lot of other people would want to see - an HVX v. DVX SD shootout by Barry. I'm right on the verge of buying a new camera and have narrowed my choices down to the DVX and HVX. My primary interest is SD, but the 12x lens and FUTURE HD capabilities of the HVX could persuade me to bite the bullet and spring for the extra bucks right now. I am REAL interested in seeing how the HVX handles SD - particularly compared to the DVX.

I got my 100a less than two months ago and this review labels it "the old dog" in the graphic, complete with a picture of Fido in case no one knows what a "dog" is. Huh?

Having shot with both the 100 and the 100a, I can say the 100a is slightly more noisy. I spent a good deal of time with the 100a and all the various settings trying to get a cleaner picture, but never could. I had thought there was something wrong with the 100a I was using....
