AG-AC90 or HC-X1000?

Which one is better overall and which one is better in low light?

Will it really be worth going 4K Ready and postponing the purchase of say... a lav system or Tripod?

For the money seems there are better choices. I own the AC90, I don't shoot without light so can't help you there but here are some ramblings. I will say the camera looks professional and video can look pretty good. You need to add ND filters in bright light. Sound quality is very good with a decent mic. Autofocus works great. It's a very rugged camera, I have put many hard hours on it and has held up well. Great stabilization. The camera is older and you can probably pick one up cheap used. My buddy was having a hard time selling his and he hardly used it.

I been looking for other models and there doesn't seem to be any other model that offers 1080P60 in a ENG format/style body, well there's the up and coming Sony HXR-NX100 but it's been delayed even more and it's also a Sony, not many networks and crews here locally use them.

I can't always get away with a onboard light in certain events so lowlight with just the ambient is important. Is the built in ND Filter not good enough in bright light?

I'd be lucky to find an AC90 here used as the used market here is practically non-existent for that model... the DVX100 perhaps but nothing newer.

There is no built in ND filter on the AC90. Sony PXW-x70 is near same price, is good in low light, has built in NDs, 1080p 60fps & 10 bit color. I haven't used it but reviews look good.

The PXW-X70 is laid out like a consumer camcorder because the chassis is basically it, a consumer camcorder. I'd rather having faster access to settings rather than like switching from Focus and Zoom on the X70.

The upcoming HXR-NX100 would be nice but it got delayed to November instead of the original October 8. The 1" sensor should be better in low light and it's also cheaper than both the AC90 and X1000 but we still don't know how great the Sony is in real life.

That 1" sensor is still tempting just because I've always liked DOF. But no 4K.

The AC90 does have a built-in ND filter. But it is not user-selectable. It is integrated to the exposure system, and is engaged automatically and seamlessly.
This.

EDIT: Correct me if I'm wrong but the sensor on the X1000 is about 3 - 4 times larger than what's in the AC90 right? Like 4 of the AC90's sensors can fit in a single X1000 sensor?

The actually-used portion of the sensor on the X1000 is bigger than the AC90, but not by that much. There's technically a 1/2.3" sensor in there, but it only uses the central portion of it, so the effective actual sensor area is about 1/3".

Why would they only use the center portion of the sensor? The FOV is the same when recording in HD and 4K right?

So the X1000 would still be the better choice? The price difference on the offers to me is $855 and that would mean I won't be able to purchase a Lavelier system right away. I'd have to save whatever the camera is going to earn and purchase the Lav at a later date.

I'd still have a Shotgun and Handheld mic though.

Because it's a highly pixel-dense chip, and because the lens necessary for that size of camera would be much smaller dealing with a 1/3" sensor patch, than it would be with a 1/2.3" sensor patch.

I think it is, but I don't remember offhand.

The AC90 is a good camera, but it's a few years old now, there are things the X1000 can do that the AC90 can't (such as 4K, for example). I can't say which would be the better purchase for you; only that they're about comparable size, and the X1000 does about everything the AC90 does, and it does things the AC90 can't. If you don't need those additional capabilities, save the dough and get an AC90; if you think you could use or may need those additional capabilities, the X1000 would be the better choice.

The HC-X1000 is good for long focal range ranges but on wider angle filming my low cost bridge FZ1000 blows my X1000 away for detail,i dont think the HC-X1000 can record true 4K.

Can you quickly show a comparison of the two?

It's logical to think that a camera with a 1" sensor would be better. But the FZ1000 doesn't have the body of the X1000 and XLR Inputs of it too. If only they used a larger sensor on the X1000.

EDIT: I really want a ENG body and XLR Inputs but I also want DOF in a small budget. So just comparing low light performance and nothing else, will the X1000 be better than the AC90?

Hi bought the HC-X1000 for wildlife filming and for that it is good, with better focusing and a parafocal lens it is better than the FZ1000,for run of the meal filming on wider zoom lengths shooting material like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed2hbyUP1-c the FZ1000 resolves more detail.the HC-X1000 is not good in low light but i did not expect it to be,so for what i bought mine for it is suitable for the present.

Bought the HC-X1000 and I'm really hoping it does better in low light than the AC-90... I don't have an AC-90 to compare to.

I own Ag-Ac90 and have recorded close to around 700 hours of video. It is excellent, by setting a little bit of extra gain, exposure and quality is excellent. But sometimes, I have hard time setting or getting the correct white balance and accurate colors. I had rented HC-X1000 couple of time to test (only 1080P not 4K), and found HC-X1000to be very grainy compared AC90. It was to such an extent that I could not give it to the client. Of course the shoot was in a hall with low light. So did not buy it. Waited fo DVX-200, but it is just out of my budget. So finally bought a Sony HXR-NX100 as a second cam. Still testing. Covered 5 events with it, yet to check the quality and how it stands against Ac90.
