"After the Fire" a (very short) Short

Nothing fancy. 18-55 kit lens on my T2i. Trying to capture the... mood, really, the kind of sadness after a fire gutted my alma mater's library recently.

I think a lot of the "story" of it really happened in the grading. Pumped up the grays and blues and, in one shot the reds. A fun little experiment in color and mood.

EDIT: PaPa got it working, it's in his post below. Not sure where I fouled up the tags!

By the way, I'm new to posting but I've lurked here and there for a bit.

The only interestings shots are the ones with the books strewn about. The rest you could get anywhere - I would say focus on the shots that are unique to this scene: a library devastated by a fire.

I do understand if this is all you could get though, since you mentioned access was limited.

Thanks PaPa. Not sure where I went wrong in the tags.

Gabrielflorit-- Yeah, that's a pretty valid criticism. That's pretty much all I could get to. I'm hoping that some more access opens up soon. It would be great if I could capture more of the rebuilding and get a short out of that.

I think that's part of it though, that it could happen anywhere. And also the audience that will be most impacted are people familliar with the building so they need reference points to reassociate with thier memories. Just a thought, throwing it out there...

I really liked the look/grade you got.

I also agree with the other posters that there could be some more shots that say "hey, this was a functioning library before this fire." Maybe some more of the singed books laying about. I think that was the only shot of a book in the whole piece. More shots of damaged books would sort of elevate the sympathy level. When I saw that shot, I thought, all that knowledge, all those stories are kinda laying there... just dead.

Also, if you get a chance to shoot more, I'd use a tripod instead of hand held. Its not that you shot hand held too shakey, but the stillness of shooting on a tripod would elevate this type of piece's mood. A few too many rack focuses as well (I'm guilty of it too when I'm out shooting).

Still though, you've got an interesting subject to work with. As you said, maybe shoot more when you can get more access and also capture some of the rebuilding. I think that could be interesting and a way to help out the library.

I'm going to change my name to " I Hate Rack Focus " .

Honestly people over do this in almost every clip I am seeing. I would do it the most once or twice and that's it or I wouldn't even do it at all.
