After Effects Settings

What are the COMP setting I should use when I import my HVX footage at 720.
When I set it at DVPRO HD at 720x 960 the the footage looks stretched and falls off each side of the comp.

I am in the same boat, and also confused,

as i used Cineform to convert (resize video "none") and draged the clip afterwards directly into the "create new composition" Icon, so AE should automaticly do the right settings, shouldnt it?

Also adjusting in settings doesnt help. it still looks like wrong aspect ratio.

I am in Pal country, if i just check the clip in AE it says "960x720 1,33"..am i missing something?

I know that there are no pal hd settings preset in AE 7.0 yet, but a custom project should work??!?

Check the pixel aspect ratio of your composition settings, and also check the interpretation of your clips that you import.

For PAL:

Try 960x720 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.33 for 720
and 1440x1080 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.33 for 1080

In your compostion window find the View Options and make sure you have Pixel Aspect ratio correction checked to make everything look right and not all squashed.

Hi Milezee,

the crazy thing is, that AE interprets the 720-footage exactly as a 960x720 clip, in 1,33 aspect ration (it says :"HDV 1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1,33)"), but its squashed, looks more like a 4:3 picture.

I really dont know, maybe i am wrong here, and everything is fine, but its deffinitly a different size from what i see playing that avi in media player..!?

I feel lost, are you a Pal user Milezee?
And if yes, how is your workaround, and what hints do you got?
maybe you could post a oicture from your settings and from some footage?
Thanks!

By defualt, the After Effects preview window does not compensate for the PAR, it shows you pixel for pixel, so, yes, it will look a bit squished. There is a button on the bottom edge of the preview window you can click to preview with PAR. The button looks like a square with vertical lines on the right and left (this is from memory, I'm away from AE right now).

On the Mac, Quicktime delivers 1280x720 and 1920x1080 footage to AE.
So the settings should be 1280x720 square, or 1920x1080 square, in the interpretation dialog if you are importing DVCPRO HD into AE on a Mac.

Correct your view with either 1. or 2. as per screen grab.....

Joshua, Anders and Milezee-Thanks a lot!

I thought i am good in doing AE, but this teaches me somethingdifferent, anyway, great to have your help.

When i exported some footage (from the 960x720 PAR 1,33-project) i have to "stretch" the footage to 1280x720 to make it look right.

Does anyone know why it is like that?

How do you guys monitor your footage when doing a cc in AE???
I am really looking to find a good solution (thinking about the NX card and EDIUS Broadcast 4-just for editing-and then exporting canopus HQ codec for AE) to breakout my signal from AE to a control-monitor! Any suggestion and experience welcome, SPECIALLY from Pal HVX owners-thnaks a lot!!

Germanboy, this is DV basics. The codec saves space by only storing 960x720 pixels, not the full 1280x720. On playback through the component outputs, it gets blown up to the full size. The pixel aspect ratio (PAR) is a guide to how the pixels should be interpreted. SD video also has PAR's.

Usually when working in AE, I just leave the PAR correction turned off, it's faster that way. I'm only color correcting, not editing, so the squished image doesn't matter much to me at that point.
