After considerable delay...

I had posted ina few other threads, how I needed a bigger desk.

My old desk, rescued from the curb.

I looked around and couldn't find anything that suited me that was in my price range, and not made out of sawdust and glue. So I took matters into my own hands, and took my Visa up to Lowes... when the wife wasn't looking. I ended up spending about $200 on lumber, paint, and various hardware. Maybe another $50 on new saw blades, bits, and a new jigsaw and sander. Of course, during construction, it sort of took on a life of it's own. After a month or two of distractions and delays, I present-

The new desk

This beast ended up at 4' deep and 8' wide. I still need to add hinged access doors to the back of the cabinets, but I was anxious to move in.

The computer cabinet holds two PCs, DVD player, VCR, Cable box, 20 monitor, and most of my software, putting everything within reach.

The printer cabinet holds my printer/scanner, has 4 drawers for various paper and card stock, as well as another drawer for blank disk media. All drawers are made with Western Red Cedar and either Beech or Birch fronts, I'm not sure which anymore. I had a few planks just laying around and put them to use.

17" flat screen on the desk, 32" flat screen on the wall. The keyboard drawer is curved to accomodate my expanding waistline, and is adjustable for more headroom... for when I need to run cables.

And as you can see, there are lots of cables, but at least they are a bit more manageable now. They'll be hidden when I finish the access doors. All in all, I'm happy with the way it turned out. Not as nice as I had hoped, but considering I have no carpentry skills, it came out way better than I expected. I'm just glad my office is big enough to fit it and my bar.

when I saw the first post, I thought: "forget the desk, you need a new computer, brother..."

but good call on that DYI solution. Desks are SOOOOO crazy overpriced.

I see barstools. Hey Bob Villa, you need to clear all the stuff off that other desk and turn it into a bar for those stressful edits. Instant gratification after/during a marathon session!

Is the 32" wall mount routed to your computer?

haha. i assume you also got to determine the position of the desk because most wives probably wouldn't want you to have the wires facing out like that. anyways, nice upgrade.

The barstools are in front of the bar, you just can't see it because of all the stuff on it. I'm still in the process of straightening up, and only have so much room... even less now that the desk is in there. However, the backside is clear, where the booze and mini fridge are.

The 32 runs via S-vid from a video switcher on top ot the 20", and to the computer.

The wires sticking out are just temporary, until I can sneak off to Lowes for more wood and hinges. Kind of hard to do now, she's wise to me ;)

Heh heh... yeah, when I saw the blueberry iMac I thought I'd found a buyer for my 400MHz G4 (circa 1999). :)

Nice work. Now if you had just made room for the mini fridge in the desk, you wouldn't even have to get up.

that's what i'm talking about. also, it would be pretty awesome if you could somehow convert the office chair into a toilet.

If I had made room in the desk for the mini fridge, I would have to either climb over the desk or under it. As it is, I need to turn sideways to get by.

Holy crap, nice looking desk. I'm in the market for a new desk unfortunately I don't any wood working abilities (nor a place to work even if I did).

Whoa, there Captain, now you have a ship to command!
You think that's impressive, wait till you see it transform into battle mode ;)

Adkimery, I don't really have any skills either, but I like to give it Hell just the same. As far as a place to work on it, our car sat in the driveway until it was done, because I took over the entire garage. As a matter of fact, the reason I hurried to finish it up, was because we were late on the car payments. They can't repo it in the garage.
