AFS & AFC behave differently in video mode

According to the manual and what I've read here, these two settings are supposed to be the same when in video mode (i.e. they both actually do AFC). However, I just ran into a situation where AFC was hunting for focus and wouldn't lock on before I hit record, and then once recording it continued to hunt and breathe. Then when I switched to AFS it instantly locked into focus with a half-shutter press before recording and held that focus during recording. What gives?

check your metering mode? face recognition, etc?...you're right though...AFS and AFC are supposed to behave the same in video mode. i'm not sure i've had a problem with it such as you have, so it may be a quirk with what you're shooting?....try more tests, but if it persists, stick with what works better for you.

Thanks, I'll play with the different AF metering modes. I haven't really delved into that yet.

If AF-S does in fact work in video mode on your camera, then I'll be happy to trade bodies with you. IMHO, it's where Panny dropped the ball with the GH1. I'd give my left kidney for AF-S!!!

As many have said, the camera will do AFC with the kit lens whether you set the dial to AFS or AFC. There are two ways to lock the focus, one is to switch the AF mode dial to MF and switch back to AFC when you need to re-AF. You can also program the AE-L/AF-L button to perform AF-L (AF lock) and this will lock the AF until you unlock it again. After some practice it is no big deal. However as some of us discussed here a few days ago, what is really missing is the lack of AF-tracking function during video, which will help a great deal to lock the AF on a particular moving object of interest.

I'm under the impression that once you unlock the AF, you will not be able to lock it again unless you stop recording. Is this true?

If I remember correctly, you should be able to use either method and continue filming. I am pretty sure about the mode dial. I just learned to use the AF-L button which is easier to operate with one hand and have not done any extensive testing. This should be easy to do though.

Correction, if you use the AF-L button to lock and unlock during filming, you cannot re-lock it again during filming. This is really stupid!
