Affordable small camera, with DVX look

Hi there,

I am not sure if I am writing in the right section, as what I need might not only concern Canon products, but I could not find a more suitable place. For a project I need to fix numerous cameras inside a car. They could be even consumer cameras.

Here is what matters to the project:

- skin-tones, colours should be rendered well

- reasonable low-light capabilities

- It has to be small, but does not have to be tiny

- potentially no rolling shutter issues, because of vibration

- it could be lower resolution, even SD and mini DV. If a look close to a DVX100 is possible that would be fantastic. (the camera has to be smaller though)

Many thanks for any advice.

Your not going to get DVX quality without a DVX. The color matrix of Panasonic cameras makes them famous for their "Panasonic Mojo". The only other camera I can recommend is the Canon GL2. It will have better low light than a single CCD consumer camera, but not as good as the DVX. The level of manual control you get with the DVX is strictly a DVX thing, especially in this price range.

I've seen the GL2 used by some networks, most recently, I remember seeing a cameraman holding a GL2 while in the cockpit of a 747 (during takeoff) for an American Airlines documentary on MSNBC.

It wasn't the same quality as the other cameras used for the doc., but it wasn't horrible.

Thanks a lot for your input Joe,

Yes, for me it is the size/quality/price ration which matter, as they have to be fixed in the corners of a car. The JL2 is a bit too big. I've been looking at this camera:

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-PV-...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1260487705&sr=8-1

Thought ccd might be better than cmos, because of rolling shutter. Resolution and manual control won't matter too much. It is mainly the overall feel of the picture. (know that's quite subjective). Thanks!

Can you tell us your budget?

Recently, a lot of new cameras have come on to the market and you have a real opportunity
to pickup a used DVX for a great price as users are looking to upgrade.

If you go to the "Marketplace" section of this site, you can post "Looking for used DVX" you're
sure to get a lot of interest.

Consumer camera's like the one you posted are fine, but there are so many things other than
technical specs that make a great camera. Form factor, ease of use, microphone inputs, etc.

As for size, I've placed my DVX on the dashboard of my car. With the viewfinder "up" it's only
10.5" long. Of course if you need smaller, I'm sure you'll get some suggestions from other members.

Hi there,

Yes, my budget could reach € 1000, however would preferably stay below €500, as I would perhaps need 4 cameras of that type. I got an HVX myself and have used the DVX previously, but do need something smaller.

Many thanks,

i
