AF101 Officially on the BBC Approved Camera List

I don't. I never tried to pitch a project for it anyways, but whenever I tell a potential employer/client that I shoot on a BBC approved camera, they seem happy.

BBC still has a positive international reputation - both in journalistic as in technical terms. London based Vatican of broadcasting. If they say "it" is okay a lot of people will follow.

That's not really the point. The fact is that any and all network/cable companies that don't have the resources (or don't want to expend the time and money) will use the BBC as a reference, just as they did with super16 in the 1980s. Sadly (for me at least, because I miss it) the BBC no longer approves super16 for production, which is ironic when you consider that some of their best shows, originally shot in super16 and remastered for digital, look great on contemporary screens.

Most Music Videos that are aired on Major Tv Stations are being shot with Dslr cameras. Not sure if that falls under BBC, but it's something to think about.

I think over time more people will shoot more and more music videos with this newer generation of large chip cameras, like the AF100, the Sony FS-100, and whatever else appears on the market. I don't think that there is as much of a reason to shoot with DSLR for something like that anymore.

Yeah, well most of BLACK SWAN was shot on super16, but that doesn't seem to matter to anyone. I know, that's a different animal - theatrical release - and there is supposed to be an artifact problem when mastering super16 to HD - but I'll bet BLACK SWAN looks darn good when it's on cable - I know LEAVING LAS VEGAS does.

So I guess it's like the Beeb has blessed the AF?

It's like it goes with getting the beatification: First they check on everything and find also the black spots in your life and performance. Then the pope pads your head and sprinkles you with holy water.

The AG-AF may not be getting a real "canonization" as a main-cam for HD-production (maybe only for reasons of brand name..... ;-) ) but as a perfect "go-between". I doubt on the other hand a TV station will refuse material that is really great if it comes from this camera and they really want to have it.

Still wait for the German TV to find their verdict, which will probably not be an official listing but just if they find the AG-AF to be in accordance to the EBU norm (external recorder). We use it as B-Cam for a 90 minutes TV-Movie currently (about 2-3% of shots coming from my AKIKO, rest ist ALEXA) and the guys said it's okay for them.

If you have a special situation where you need a smaller camera one may also convince them to accept it as main-camera. But this will clearly be a scarce exception and not the rule. So nobody should speculate on that and rather make sure in advance if they do it. Or one is getting into trouble.

Well, something to remember here is that the AF100 is on the "HD Specialist" list. If you heard the BBC Scotland evaluation of big-sensor cameras, they said that approval looked likely "for shows where this type of camera was appropriate" (or words to that effect). It's not really a do-everything camera, as we all know -- it's mainly for cinema-style shooting. As such, it was approved on the HD Specialist list. What else is on the HD Specialist list? Some pretty frickin' amazing cameras: The Sony F35, the Panasonic VariCams, the Sony SRW9000, the Sony F3, the Arri Alexa, the Arri D21, the Panavision Genesis, the Thompson Viper, and the Red cameras.

Not bad company to be in.

It does! I don't have the greatest HDTV in the world and Black Swan looked really really good.
