AF100A price reduction?

If you're trying to test the validity of a 10-bit output, the test is really simple -- just go in a dark room and shine a single light on a wall, and then film it from the bright spot out to the dark. For the AF105A, record internally and externally, and then post the pics to compare.

I suppose that could be used to test whether or not it was a true 10 bit signal... but would be of little use for anything else... Banding maybe.

Of course any footage from the A would be better then what's out there now. Odd that Panny wouldn't hire someone experienced with the AF100 to go shoot a day's worth of footage for the A's release (obviously plenty of shooters here who could do a bang up job). Sony manages to get footage of their cameras up, even for the VG20 & 30.

Agreed. Its funny that there's no 'official footage'...

I was going to buy a BM HyperDeck Shuttle and test it once and for all... but I broke my pelvis in a bicycle racing accident last Wednesday and those funds are going towards my hospital bill. Whoops!

It's the only test that would be meaningful. I mean, what else are you expecting 10-bit to do? It gives finer gradations and minimizes banding... that's the whole point of 10-bit...

Yes, someone could post random footage that nobody'd really see a difference on and then they'd complain and everyone would complain and the question would remain unsettled. People tried to say there was no aliasing in the BMC, when there was horrific aliasing in the BMC, as revealed on a test that's designed to show exactly that. So if you want to test the AF100A to see if there's a substantial difference, why not test it with the one easy-to-do test that's guaranteed to show the difference?

Well, not sure that's enough to really put it through it's paces. For instance, would the color rendition - which should indeed be finer by a wide margin - be correspondingly more smooth/accurate? Is it possible tat the higher bit rate could help in other areas, such as wide shots with movement? Does it aid in keying green screen work?

Simply put, it might be a full step forward in image quality that can only truly be tested by putting the camera through it's paces - maybe the higher bit rate gives it a certain mojo. If so, I'd think it would be worth upgrading from the standard model. In other words, I'm giving this camera the benefit of the doubt.

And heck - like I said - I'd like to see any footage recorded to an outboard recorder from this camera. I've always dug the AF100.

+1 What Barry said.

No doubt there are many people who would prefer a whole avalanche of Vimeo-compressed footage so they could argue over it and pretend to be pixel-peeping experts, but the simple, definitive test that Barry mentioned would answer the basic question about any improvement the 10-bit SDI output offers.

Will do. Thanks, Barry.

What's interesting to me is that I've done tests shooting skyline gradations with the AF105A and the internal footage doesn't show any signs of banding. Maybe it's because I'm in "pure Michigan" and the skies are more pristine and video friendly!

Either that, or maybe the "pure Michigan" skies are naturally banded -- then who'd notice?

But, gotta hand it to ya -- that was one of the slickest state promo segues I've encountered for a while. I hope they hire you to shoot all their tourism publicity.

Only to a degree. You have greater protection if it's sold by amazon directly, but neither of these in the links are.

And yes, the prices are coming down. I suppose it still has room to go down, but these are amazing prices as it is for someone who wants a fully functioning video camera without the hassles of DLSR.

Happy healing! I broke my collar bone mountain biking last year...

If you want to do a test, compare the side of your original pelvis (the original 100 pelvis) and your repaired pelvis (100A)!
My titanium plate and 6 screws clavicle is much stronger than the original! haha!

I am really loving using my GH3, despite the hassle of working with a DSLR.

What I really would like would be an AG-AF105A with the GH3's sensor in it, and the GH3's recording options. I'd sell everything else I own besides the GH3 for that beast, if it was available.

I think if you opt for the free shipping it always says 7-14 days. I just ordered a $9 adapter using free shipping and thats what they said. IN actuality living in NYC it arrived in 3 days, sometimes I've gotten their free shipping the next morning

Here in France the AF100 is sold around 4500-4900 euros! That is to say 5800-6300 dollars, so no price drop here. In my opinion at that price point it's just unbeatable, you won't get a camera with such vital features at that price, period. Sure BMCC is less expensive, but if you want the same features as the AF100 you'll need to buy separate items that will quickly raise the price to 5000 euros.

What's the price now, Caheb? I have an AF100 for sale. I'm happy with the AF100 but have a contracted job and won't be indie shooting for a whole year. I'm currently in London but heading east... 195 operational hours...spotless, like new, anyone interested? £1600, $2200, 1800 Euros.
