AF100 Owner Rental Rates

I have read this often ... so.. I am asking.

...why do "your clients" dictate, request or ask for a certain camera on their jobs?

What sort of jobs are they? Are your clients particularly well informed technically or creatively? Do they actually have a reason to base the request on?

Its a production company decision as far as I am concerned.

Obviousl its a different story if your clients are production companies renting gear from you.

Most producers I know know the difference and love the af-100.

Most agencies ask for the 5d because they think it is "hip" now.

That's probably a fair characterization .. the only difference in my world is the definition of "producer"

Here's a little story from my experience .

I had large budget ( Australia / NZ / huge international brand) shoot to do early this year but I bid it and won it around October/ November last year.
As early as that , I knew about the AF100 and its imminent release and I immediately started considering if it may have been worthy and capable of doing this job. I had Red budgeted as a fall back position.

Subsequently the AF102 camera was released (late December / Early January in New Zealand).

I tested it and was confident that it would do the business for this production.

Shoot day eventually arrived. Clients on set from Australia and New Zealand, Advt. Agencies / Creatives on set from Australia and New Zealand.

From pre production throught to shoot days through to post production... not one client / agency person ever asked what we were shooting on.

The images satisfied everyone from the on set monitors through the entire workflow.

If anyone had of asked for a 5d " because it was hip".. I would have informed them ...they were wankers and did not have a clue about what they were asking for.

Taking a professional stance is the way we need to treat clients.

Realistically, the rental rate these days has to be in the 4,5,6% of cost range given how fast the turn over is in the camera market place. My kits, because I use them myself, are well stocked with all the needed items and everything works, the batteries are fresh, plenty of media etc. I charge a a solid rate and my clients do not quibble at all. At some level as a DP I provide a service and am there to guarantee some results. If I have the right gear and I know how it all works that is an important piece of the puzzle in terms of getting the results that the client hires me for.

Right now I am at about 5% in terms of rental rate

I have shot a total of 2 days over the last 2 years with DSLR's and if a producer came to me specifying one of those DSLR cameras I might well turn the project down. Its a waste of time.
