AF100 new brochure with final specs!

Yes, by comparison a P2 Varicam would have a 32 bit DSP down converted to 10-bit for AVC-Intra 100 and the three HD SDI outputs.

Thanks. You know what I realize about this cam? It is going to be huge when the hackers get to it and memory becomes faster/cheaper. Imagine the possibilities of a raw 18bit image out of a hacked 5k camera. Memory is clearly the limiting factor at the moment, not the camera anymore.

If you are #91 then I suggest looking for a different distributor if you want one early. Someone mentioned a company I think called Silverado or similar to that who were on 6/10 of their allocation.

Panasonic no longer sells directly to resellers, they go through distributors entirely. So allocation is no longer guaranteed, unless of course the distributors decide to spread the cameras around. #91 is not bad at all considering the number we ordered and when we did. :)

We even switched our holiday schedule around to make sure that the cameras get out to everyone.

Back to the brochure

I have noticed that resolution is stated as 800 lines. Much less than the EX1 / EX3.

I eagerly wait for Barry's test shoot.

I'm guessing you are going to have to see what is more important - shallow DOF or resolution. On the AF100, would would be the point of having a high resolution bokeh area?

What is more important to me is the resolution in the focussed area. No one will keep the entire image out of focus.

Nigel Cooper rated both cameras at 800 lines solid with breakup at 1000. He reported the cameras to be very close. The EX1/3 is probably slightly better than the AF100 at resolving.

Understood. It's at least better than the HVX and keep in mind, with shallow DOF, focused areas appear sharper than they really are.

Steve

That is why I eagerly wait for Barry's test.

I need to clarify more.

I own a RED ONE and EX1 cameras, and I preordered an AF 100 (AF 100EN) from Sensys Singapore. Those cameras were mainly used to shoot feature film for theatrical distribution in 35 mm. The 8.5 stops of DR or 4:2:0 sampling of the EX1 did not pose any problems including some heavy Green Screen and VFX work. SO I am not bothered by the 4:2:0 sampling and 10.5 stops DR is welcome. But for 35mm film outs resolution plays an important role.

Following are some frames from our latest film entirely shot using EX1,which was selected to show in the World Cinema section at the Indian International Film Festival.

Thanks.

I also notice there is a math error on the LCD pixel information. It lists the resolution of the LCD display as 1920x480, but gives a dot resolution of like 912,600.

While I really appreciate Nigel going to the trouble to do that it has always sounded like he eyeballed it, and subjective determinations can be influenced by subconscious bias. Most people said something like its a little softer and organic. (Not that that's a bad thing.)

I prefer programs that compare the images from both cameras. Failing that so see for myself.

There is one resolution test posted showing crops at 400%, but when I downloaded the original footage it was at half resolution, so useless.

From all that we can safely say its somewhere between HMC150 (and XH-A1) resolution and PMW-EX1/3 resolution, but there's about 25% more data between those two groups so I'd really like to know where it falls in that range.

A quick read of the brochure and I'm seeing 1080/59.94i as the max frame rate. Is there 1080/60p or not? Is it carried over 1080i? Also I'm assuming that overcrank can go up to 60fps inside any of the listed formats:

1080/59.94i
1080/29.97p 1080/23.98p
720/59.94p 720/29.97p 720/23.98p

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere - I did a quick search and didn't find the answer.

LCD manufacturers quote all sorts of numbers, but the basic fact is: it's 640x480x3. There are 640x480 red dots, 640x480 green dots, and 640x480 blue dots. Which adds up to 921,600. Which is the same resolution as the EX1/EX3; it means 640x480 in terms of actual resolved color detail. The viewfinder is higher res, at (I think) 852x480, which is as high or higher than the Redrock or Zacuto electronic viewfinders.

Is there 1080/60p or not?
As overcrank, yes. As 1080/60p as 60p (for the "live" look, like 720/60p) no.

Is it carried over 1080i?
In recording, no. In display, yes.

Also I'm assuming that overcrank can go up to 60fps inside any of the listed formats:
1080/24p and 1080/30p can go up to 60fps.
1080/25p can go up to 50fps.
720p doesn't have any variable frame rate capability, so it's fixed at 24, 25, 30, 50, or 60.

Thanks for clarifying what the right values were :) Yes, I am aware of how all over the place LCD manufacturers are. The whole 'x many dots' is just marketing as far as I am concerned. All I want to know is what is the resolution of the display in terms of the same standard method of given resolution that we've grown accustomed to. People get more excited / let down when they discover that 3x multiplier on dots.

Nevertheless, it was nice reading through the document. I didn't realize they were actually NOT using a CMOS design, but an MOS design which I must assume they are using either P or N devices by themselves eliminating the need for the additional connection, which means they are using the sensor substrate as the 3rd connection, in essence (and a good idea).

But the bottom line really is the camera just cannot get here fast enough :)

Barry -

I haven't heard of anybody even testing the AF100 at 720p. This could be pretty valuable info to have. I would be using the AF100 with HPX170s in a switching environment, and I want to keep it all running HDSDI at 720p/60. Any observations on the 720p would be awesome... Thanks!

I don't see any listed s/n ratio. This is odd. The EX1 is 54. The F3 is 63. The AF100 footage I've seen on a monitor
looked a tad noisy. I liked the look overall however S/N is something I expect to see published by the manufacturer and
if it's being omitted, it's a concern. No google return for me on this. Anyone have info?

When we did the New Mexico Spaceport dedication, the AF100 was used in 720p that whole time. Works fine, looks great.
