AF100 Magenta 5600K preset

Howdy,

When set to 5600K (and shooting outdoors), our two AF100's are showing a magenta shift with pronounced fringing near overexposed areas (tops of trees, cloud edges, etc.). It looks like CA, but doesn't have the typical corresponding green fringing and it goes away altogether when shooting indoors or with different WB settings. When we use custom WB's the magenta disappears. Has anyone else seen this issue? It seems like the 5600K preset has a tint shift that the custom WB's don't exhibit...

Thanks

Hmm...you might be onto something. The uneven clipping of the highlights is an issue of the AF100 BUT...you're the first to state that going to custom WB removes the issue. I'm going to do tests on this ASAP. I prefer using Custom K values anyways...

Off to test...if this is the case then most people who have a big issue with the color in the highlights have hope! :)

This was also a problem with the HPX500, they fixed it, but it required a trip to the shop. I've noticed it too, not as bad as it was on the 500, but not good. I often prefer to use presets for a variety of reasons that I won't go into, but this is keeping me from doing that.

My "fix" on the 500 (until Panasonic fixed it) was to create a permanent custom preset on A or B for daylight. But with the ability to dial in on the AF, I'll probably just do that this time.

We have just received our 2 AF100s. I haven't encountered this as of yet. Thanks for putting it on my radar!

We noticed that when (unscientifically) testing ours next to our RED-MX... it was nothing a adding a little green in post wont fix, but it is def there if you look for it. Not a big deal in my opinion, just one of those things to be aware of with this camera.

I too have noticed the custom white balances to be very accurate... it is just the presets that have the slight tint.

I should note, we just dialed in 5600K on both cameras, and stock everything else with detail settings at -2 on the AF100 and cine-v when we shot next to our RED.

Also for some reason the magenta-ish issue became less pronounced on say the second or third interview in a typical day of talking heads. Odd. I still use my HPX-500 quite a lot. I seem to remember something like what Mac said that it was fixed with a visit to service. BTW, I was over at Panasonic service in Seacaucus NJ yesterday and will discuss in another thread. Not good things going on there.

I almost always custom WB and have never seen a magenta tint but on a recent job in Europe I was shooting at the 5600 preset a lot due to perfect sunny skies and daylight Litepanels indoors. Their is definitely a slight visible magenta tint now to all of the footage I shot when using the preset. Yes, it's a quick fix in post but not all clients plan on doing color correcting. Settings were Cine D, Norm2, Chroma -3, Details -4, Master Pedestal 0 and recorded to a Ki Pro Mini. Fortunately we were already intending to grade what we use in the show.

It's there, just as it was on the HPX500 - with that camera it took a trip to Panasonic for the fix, no cost but shipping and insurance, which is considerable these days. Hopefully this can be fixed with firmware.

It's just wrong that it needs to be "fixed in post" - if you need to show footage out of the camera it sounds like a lame excuse, and, in my case, I often don't have time for a manual white balance... By the way, I've noticed it when using the dial in WB as well.

I've also noticed the magenta tendency of the AF, actually bumped into it the other day on an outdoor shoot where we staged a shot in the shade on a sunny day.Something I would love to see in the AF is a variable green/magenta control similar to what the variable white balance control does. My gf 1 has this control built in so you can actually dial in color in a two axis fashion: warm/ cool & green/ magenta which is really sweet when you need it.

I'm pretty sure that if you adjust your chroma phase you will be able to dial in the green and magenta to counteract any magenta shift you may be getting.

Sorry, my response was in regards to the magenta ish coloring in the image. Norm 2 and fluo are more on the magenta side than Norm 1 or Cine-Like.

OH, ok sorry. Yea it is more magenta but it's the cleanest matrix. Cine-Like is very noisy IMO. I simply balance out Norm2 with a -2 Phase adjustment in the preset and bingo...more RED and less PINK is in the image. Works well. :)

Yeah, I don't use Cine Like either, way too much snow. I find Norm2 softens the image too much for my taste and that really brings out the posterizing, So I've learned to make peace with Norm 1
