AF100 Ki Pro Issue--Update Ki Pro Firmware

I had an issue on a shoot with an AF100 feeding a Ki Pro via HD-SDI. The Ki Pro would intermittently drop frames and stop recording. The Ki Pro firmware was not update, after downloading the latest firmware, the issue seems to have gone away.

Did you get this resolved Jeff. I'm thinking of using a Ki Pro Mini on a AF100 or F3 (if it turns up) shoot in the UK next week. Has it been okay with the AF100, and most importantly, is the 10-bit ProResHQ a worthwhile difference in picture quality?

Peter,

One of our AF100's worked for two days this week with our Ki Pro and the DIT/sound person reported no issues. The only reason the client decided to use the Ki Pro was because there was some green scree involved as part of the shoot. I've yet to see any compression artifacts or other issues with AVCCAM PH. I've been looking very carefully on a 100" projection screen, where I have seen artifacts from DVCPRO HD previously. I've watched the same footage with ProRes HQ and can't see any difference. Color space differences are very difficult for the human eye to discern, be it 4:2:0, 4:2:2 or 4:4:4. I have seen some nasty 4:1:1 artifacts though!

Thanks Jeff,

I think we are going to go with the HPX2700 for the wide panaramic deep focus shots like the one we did in Paris (link) and the AF101 for the interior actor-driven scenes. We are filming some scenes in a dark English manor with a small lighting kit, so I'm hoping we can fight any low-light noise issues. It will be controlled lighting so I'm hopeful. We would have hired the F3, but it seems it may not be available in the UK then. It may not do real shallow DOF, but the 2700 is still up with my favorite cameras, especially in 10-bit AVC-intra and 50P for slo-mo.

Peter, I'm with you re: HPX2700. It handles highlights and has tonality in a different class than sub-$10K cameras--which it should!

It sure does! Despite the DOF differences, do you think the 2700 and AF100 could intercut okay? We plan to bake-in the look on the AF100 as we are shooting, to avoid any post grading issues.

If the 2700 is used for exterior wide shots and the AF100 is for interior tighter scenes, using similar gamma, matrix and detail, I don't see why not. You may want to shoot in +3db with the 2700.

Ooohh...don't like too much noise. Is that to match the noisier pix of the AF100?

We've decided to go with the 2700, P+S Technik and Zeiss Super Speeds. I'd love to try the AF100 out on a TVC, but it's probably not advisable on a big OS job in an unknown location/set. :Drogar-Thinking(DBG

Yes I hadn't thought of that. We're taking my two GH1.3's as well with my Zeiss Contax kit. I don't know how we are fit all this in a Tarago! (people mover for you northern types).

Oops....really moving OT now....
