For my part, next time I get one, I'll be testing overexposure, and LCD backlight issues, and gamma curve highlight rolloffs. We'll get to the bottom of this.

Exactly. Except it's not available in cine-D, because the whole point of cine-D is to be as flat as possible. Flat, and rolloff, don't go together in the same sentence. If you have black compression and white compression, then that (by very definition) is not flat.

That might be the source of some confusion around these threads. A flat *curve* and a flat *image* are two different things. Most artsy types would call an image with low-contrast, low saturation and with lots of rolloff in the highlights a "flat image". A lot of interest for the AF-100 comes from the 5D/7D crowd, some of which follow Stu Maschwitz' advice to shoot flat (with HTP on and contrast all the way down, that's not a flat curve for sure). If these guys ask how to setup the AF100 to be "flat" and are directed towards settings that have no highlight rolloff whatsoever, then hilarity ensues.
