AF100 iPhone app idea

Don't think so Tim. And yes it dos seem straight forward. But to make it really cool it would have the menus over the screens and when you get to each menu choice it would allow you to make the choice. But there are a couple oddities in there, like if you don't have an SD card in there, the choices for interval aren't available for choosing. So somehow you would have to show that the app is able to do something that the camera can only do if there is a card in the camera. This would have saved me and other well known people some head scratching on the NAB floor. ;-)

The easy solution to this would be toggle switches, such as [Lumix lens? yes/no; SD card? yes/no; SD card class? -4,4,6+; etc.).

Of course, once made, the simulator would have to account for the latest firmware updates, or maybe even have a firmware version toggle.

Also it would be even more cool if it overlaid the menus onto the Iphone's built-in camera 'live' for a true simulated experience. Now we're talking a little harder but it could be done... Question is would enough folks buy it to justify the dev costs?

Great idea...I am a technical DP for H Preston Video in the UK and many times I am out and about and someone phones about a menu driven problem. The Panasonic and Sony versions would be fantastic, I recently finished a 60m DVD about the AF101 and had to prepare the Panasonic menu system in Apple Motion. The menu structure was designed in Photoshop as layers then brought into Motion as layers to be switched on and off as necessary. It took quite a lot of man power to Photoshop the various menu structures. If they are of any use send me an email and I can upload the PSDs.

I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about doing with the live video. - Tim

I would love to be able to get Barry's book as an app (or perferably as an e-book for my Kindle or as a .pdf for whatever digital device) for reference when needed. These kind of references are great on digital devices to be able to refer to the book on the go.

the camera overlays the menus onto the incoming image from the lens. The iPhone has a camera. Why not simulate the way the camera really works, i.e. overlay your simulated menu over the live video input of the iPhone. this is available in the SDK- camera overlay functionality. Just a suggestion.

Understood. I was unsure if you were talking about making any of the menus actually affect the image that was coming in through the camera.

The first cut I'm working on just pulls the menu structure in from an XML file, and reproduces the menus using the standard iOS user interface navigation elements. Once that's working (along with a destination/info page at the tip of every menu branch with a quick explanation of the option), I'll look at making it simulate the look of the on-camera menus, along with a simulated joystick and possibly the camera overlay.

Thanks for the suggestion. - Tim
