AF100 Clipping Recovery Test

Disclosure: We have a lot to learn in terms of video color corrections and want to start simple.

This video shows the same scene as shot and then corrected. We first thought the original was a lost cause but we could kind of rescue the clip by using the FCP 3-Way Color tool.

On demand I could upload the original MTS clip and we could open a discussion about the vest optimal corrections.

The original didn't look that bad to me. In fact, the contrast of the original looks better in my opinion. If you pull the clip into Color you can use curves to just bring down the clipped area and leave the rest, which looks good already.

I agree with Mike

Technically you're not clipping, at least on the vimeo video

Y' is in the range >235 - but there is no hardline or data loss @Y=255 - if you look at a Y'CbCr waveform in Y'CbCr space

EDIT: whoops sorry , initially I only looked at a couple frames - one a few frames, the waves are indeed clipping

The surf isn't blown out. The original looks good. If you're concerned about the one spot on the rock near the middle of the frame or yellow highlights use Color to change just those. You can use curves and vignettes/power windows to change just those aspects. It's waaaaay more powerful and capable than FCP 3-way Color Corrector.

I know, but also way more complex :-)

I find "desaturate highlights" in FCP (as a plugin) and in Apple Color can solve weird color clipping issues by making highlights look as though they burned off to white.

True, but it affects all highlights, not just the clipped highlights. You can try the key feature in the 3-way corrector. Just use only the luma and key only the highest of the highlights. Then adjust the color.

Thanks. I added a 3rd section to the video where I restricted the change to the highlights.

Please check it for me.

Yes, I think that looks better. Good job. Did you use the key feature in 3-way Color Corrector? If not, I think if you try that you can narrow your changes down even more to just the clipped area. Otherwise I think it looks a lot better than the first color correction.

wow very nice. how did you do that. yes it technically wasn't fully clipped but still looked video-ish and poor (the one highlight on the rock) but afterwards looked great

IMO that's not a good example.

Put someone against a blown-out window with a curtain in front of it and you can begin testing how a camera treats highlights.

Seeing how AF100 treats highlights (worse than the 7D IMO) I think I'm gonna skip it and get a Scarlet, since the DOF of a Scarlet at constant f2.4 is going to be similar than the GH1/2 with the 14-140, that's not too bad.

I mean... I'm ok paying $1500 for that, but not $5000.

This was not a test. It was a shot where I had problems and think I can fix it.

My goal was not to discuss AF100 vs. the rest of the universe. Right now I want to learn the AF100 and get the very best out of it for my style of documentaries. Here I cannot chose the best light all the time (the Herons don't care of it :-) ). So far I am very optimistic to get what I want and maybe some more.

Didn't think the original looked bad or showed clipping but appreciate the test. What I'd love to see would be direct sunlight coming through some trees in a backlight situation and/or an image with something in deep shadows and something truly approcing 100 or 104 IRE... I've always found that the panasonic cameras love light and their sweet spot is as close to being blown out as you dare to push them....

Not having the AF100 yet is a decided disadvantage that I hope to correct when they start shipping but I was able to grab a Gh2 and that's an awesome little camera.... Simply love it.

cheers all.

Can you tell me the date you're planning to pick your Scarlet up? If you know I'd love to get in on that deal with you.
