Af100 and shoulder mount Tilta rig... Pretty cool

So I saw this other Tilta thread - http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?271491-My-new-TILTA-killer-riig&highlight=tilta

I really liked what I saw and so I contacted Tilta and ordered one for our AF100.

First impressions... this thing rocks. Not only does it look great but it is low profile, machined well and comfortable.

Ordering from them was a little difficult. I had to email back and forth and with the time difference it was like at midnight for a few nights. I got the shoulder rig (comes with 2 short and 2 medium rods) hand grips, and lens support for $611 including shipping to MD. They were a little slow to ship but I think they were on holiday. Once shipped it took about a week to come in.

The +'s
Overall good build quality
Nice shoulder pad
Sony V tripod mount
Easy to use
Low profile
Pretty adjustable
Solid Handles with rosettes
Good, easy, fast rod clamps

The -'s
Back rod support seems a little flimsy (but I do have a ki pro mini, battery and other stuff on it)
Springs on the kipp handles are a little looser than I would prefer (kinda surprised they even have kipp handles for the price though)
I thought the lens support came with a clamp or something to hold the lens... not just support it.
A little hard to communicate with the company.

So long and short I am very happy with the purchase and as I use it more I will post if my opinions change.

Feel free to ask if there are any questions you might have.

Now for the good stuff...

Looks well made- will you be using a monitor with it?

You have no shots of it on your shoulder, but I assume the LCD is not viewable when it's on your shoulder?

Looks good.
Can you get the camera right over the shoulder pad? For your set up it looks like the Kipro on the back balances it out. I don’t use an external recorder and would like to get the camera body right on my shoulder.
Does the knob that locks the camera to the baseplate stick out far enough to poke you in the neck?
Thanks for showing us this rig.

Yeah, sweet, man. I want one. Like to see some moving footage that you shoot with it. Thanks for sharing.

Nice pictures too, btw. What the hell did you shoot them on?

By the way, that ki pro mini, that only records files usable in FCP? I mean do the AppleProRes files open in say, Vegas?

How do you focus , adjust iris , focal length(w/ zoom lens) and turn the camera ON/OFF with your hands in that position?

Just askin' because those things always look clumsy in a practical sense (to me)

No, the way I have it mounted you can't see the LCD when it's on your shoulder, I have an EVF that I use that I don't have in the pictures.

You can get it pretty close to right under it. I would say that when the pad is fully forward and the camera is all the way back the center of the pad is about even with the rear most 1/4 hole. The knob does stick out a bitt further than I would like. It doesn't jam into your neck but if you have the camera far up on your shoulder you can feel that it's there. Again it would depend on where you have the pad positioned too.

Footage looks just like any other shoulder mounted camera....

Shot the pictures with a 5d mark II. 2500 iso :)

I don't know about Vegas but prores works with PP and Avid.

You would think so but it's not bad and a hell of a lot better than just hand holding it. You can hold the camera steady with just one hand and focus with the other. I am working on a remote stop start for the grip which will make that part easier. As for the zoom for my style of shooting I normally use it more like a variable prime, don't zoom while rolling.

I actually have found that the hand grips (while they take some getting used to) are more stable (at least for me)than a shoulder mount camera where you are gripping the lens/zoom. I also find that I keep a bettor horizon. I think it's because of using both hands and it's harder for the camera to rotate on the horizon.

1st of all i would like to tell thank you for posting pics and review about your tilta rig...... i belieave u r 1 of the 2-3 guys on earth who put pics of it online!!! Just wonder would u mind to post a detailed video clip about your rig? you would be the very first who did it! with some closer attention to minuses of the rig.... something that concirns me personaly - i read just 2-3 reviews about the tilta, and in all of them there are complains about handles that they are no closing tight enough, and that back part of the shoulder support/base plate that little rear part that holds 2 rods - seems like it attached to the main unit with just 3 small screws...... kind of scary.... but as i see u put alot of weight on it so should be fine.

clip would be great as well to hear how many noices it produce...... or there are no at all.....

would also want to find out what battaery plate and battery do u have on your rig? is it tiltas? if not what is it then?

regards

Agree. It always seems like that to me with those two grip rigs. No hands left to focus or zoom, and I want to do both because I'm using B4 lenses with a powered zoom using the Hirose cable I made. I went to a lot of trouible to get powered zoom, I want to use it!!

Plus that design means that you have to add on another EVF. Can't we use the EVF we paid for and use the AF100 in the way it was designed, rather than forcing it back to the older ENG configuration?
This looks like a more elegant solution (and I'm guessing less expensive though I can't find the price on the tilta rig anywhere).

I am not affiliated in any way with this company, and I haven't owned or used the camera ribbon so I can't vouch for their claims. But they're made right in my city, Chicago:

what mail did you use to contact them? I tried both mail addresses on their site a week ago and no response...

At $350 its to expensive and the camera is still way in front so limited. Maybe for a stock setup with no extra stuff on the camera it might work.

Just ordered the Tilta shoulder pad last night. I'm excited to get it because it seems like it is exactly what I want out of a shoulder support. I don't do a ton of hand-held work, but when I do, it has been for extended periods of time and the old shoulder rig I had (Indisystems Arriba) had the camera way too far in front and was very uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time.

I'll definitely post some photos once its in.

I'm also thinking of getting one of the Bebob V-mount battery adapters http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ng_COCO_AF_V_V_mount_Battery_Adapter_for.html or http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...OCO_15_V_Snap_on_V_mount_Battery_Adapter.html. Haven't decided which one yet. The one that mounts to the back rails would be nice because it would offer some counterbalance but the one that mounts to the camera would give me a nice little handle to hold. Choice choice choices.... Anyone have experience using either of these?

I guess the Camera Ribbon would be somewhat useful if you only shot from the shoulder while standing up, but from most any other angle it would just get in the way.

I might do a video review if I get some down time.

The back rails are I think the weakest link, however like you said I have a decent amount of weight on it and it is holding up fine so far. I might machine a plate that makes it a little more rigid but its not a priority for me right now.

The battery rig is a custom one that I machined. It takes a V-mount battery (I'm using the red batteries) and has 3 unregulated lemo ouputs, an adjustable regulated 7.2 volt lemo out for the camera and an adjustable 5 volt lemo out for accessories/usb charging.
