AF100 / AF101 - initial report

how is 2 months plenty of time? I would think 2 months is barely enough time to even BUILD the thousands of models they will need at a factory in order to meet initial demand. Are you saying they can tinker around with it until December 20 then in 7 days build tens of thousands of models AND have them all shipped in time?

I don't know that this is final hardware, so I'd want to reserve judgement. This viewfinder is much better, but that doesn't mean it's final.

If you think a 7D's LCD is good enough for manual focus, then you should be plenty happy with this viewfinder. It's sharper, and it does have peaking and colored focus assist too. I don't like using any VF without peaking.

Can the viewfinder be made B&W like on the HVX

We've been down this road with them a few times. They've been involving this community since the DVX100A. They got early versions of cameras to Jarred and me and others here and have for years. I've had a chance to work with, and usually report on, early versions of the HMC80, HPX300, HPX370, HPX500, HVX200, HPX170, HMC150, DVX100B, and now the AF100. They know what they're doing. Two months is an eternity for them. I would imagine they'd be feature-locked sometime in early December.

The hardware will be locked before the software is, obviously. I would imagine the hardware would be locked sometime late next month, and then the factory will start churning them out. But the featuresets and software can be continued to be worked on up until they have to flash the roms before putting them in the box and shipping them to you.

>I would imagine the hardware would be locked sometime late next month,

Bloom claims that Panasonic invited him to Japan to shoot a production camera mid November.

Also think that any Pre-Production camera today maybe already one month old.

>If you think a 7D's LCD is good enough for manual focus

With magnification excellent, without clearly no.

well I don't see them being able to make any drastic changes in less than a month considering bloom will see a PRODUCTION model by mid november that means there won't be any huge visual quality

You guys drive me crazy. Bloom SAID it was a "production" model, but that doesn't mean it IS a production model. Don't obsess over every letter (or every pixel) or hold the world accountable for what someone types, especially when they may not have heard it exactly as it was said, or may not know exactly what that means. I know exactly what Philip will be seeing next month, because ... well, actually, I'm not supposed to say. So let's talk about it next month.

Panasonic has multiple phases of their beta-test program. The very first thing that they produce is a form-factor mockup, the so-called wooden blocks like what the HVX was originally shown as, under the glass at NAB. Then they'll move onto various iterations of "Engineering Samples", which are basically the hand-built pre-prototypes. Then at some time they move to "PL" samples, which are the first ones made one at a time using components from the production line. Then they actually move on to serial-numbered units that roll off the factory assembly line.

The November units will NOT be production models with serial numbers.

what you're not 'supposed to say' seems like you already have this model that bloom is supposed to see. ;-)

anything you CAN say about it? ;-)

Yes, you said it was better looking. How so?? More streamlined?? less boxy?? what? Thanks.

Well, I'll post pictures. Got some work to do, but I will show some pix and write up what I did with it last week. Pretty fun stuff.

And yes, less boxy. More sleek, rounded corners, better texture, just overall much more pleasant.

i don't even care about anything about it. i only care if it's dynamic range is higher than what I've seen so far from all the test videos of af100 or not? I would guess NO because that's too big of a change to be made at this stage of the game to something that is probably too intrinsic in the sensor (i.e. entire sensor would have to be redesigned) but I'm hoping for a miracle. Do miracles exist Barry?

I shot with the new model the other day. Barry I agree that the body is much better looking. I especially like the build quality of the handle, and the LCD is the best I've seen from Panasonic. Their are still more changes to be made of course, but we snapped some pictures and shot some video in 1080 60p outside. The slow-mo is very nice looking.

Barry has already said it measured at 10.5 and that could possibly change (for better or worse depending on how they tune it.) I haven't seen any videos that scream for more dynamic range either.

i know i remember him measuring it. just wish i had more confirmation cus some of the video footage seemed a tad troubling to me.

Just curious as to why the AF100 only has focus peaking for focus assist (which I'm fine with). But I remember Jan saying something about not being able to do a zoom focus assist like other cameras. If the 5D, GH1 and HVX series can, how come this one cannot?
