AF100 / AF101 - initial report

Correct, but almost irrelevant. The cinema crop factor is so minor that you can just about ignore it. I mean, if you put a 20mm lens on a cinema camera and shoot from 10 feet, you could get the same results on an AF100 by either a) using a 23mm lens, or b) use the same 20mm lens, and shoot from 11.8 feet back instead. Really it's no big deal. It's very slightly different, but it's not some big scary thing you have to worry about. You just use either a very slightly wider lens or set the camera very slightly further back.

Did Barry Green make a mistake?!

If the crop factor for m4/3 is 1.18 vs. cinema, then at 10 feet, in order to get the same FOV as a 20mm lens on a cinema camera, you need to use a wider lens on the AF100 (i.e. 18mm), not a longer lens (i.e. 23mm).

Zeiss Master Primes cover the area of 24.9mm x 18.7m... Micro 4/3 "measures 18 mm × 13.5 mm (22.5 mm diagonal), with an imaging area of 17.3 mm × 13.0" so the closest to 35mm cinema is APS-C 22.7 × 15.1 (27.3mm diagonal).
Ok so im pretty bad at math at this point... Can anyone tell me... if i use Master Primes, oh say, the 18mm, 32mm and 50mm... what focal lengh will they have on af101?

They will still have a focal length of 18, 32, and 50mm The 'Focal' length doesn't change...

Why is this such a hard thing to understand?

I've worked for years in Film (shooting with Arri 435's and 535's) and most DP's don't ask for a specific focal length - they'll call out that they want a wide, or medium wide, or a wide wide, or a long wide, or long long, or a long zoom... get the picture? and then they look at the monitor, see how it 'feels' then change their mind.
Never in 20 years of producing big budget TV commercials have I witnessed a DP walk on a set and say "I think for this distance and blah blah blah the only lens I can use is the 50mm"

Put on a lens - see what it looks like, then either change the lens or move the f'n camera!

hmm, for what i thought it wasnt bad giving the factors of a pre release model and possibly upload errors. too many factors can go wrong so i hate judging camera footage on the internet. though DOF and image "feel" wise it looks spot on. that is clearly not a video to judge it but for me a decent take on what it could look like. any translation?

The specs say:
The camcorder records 1080/60i, 50i, 30p, 25p
and 24p (native) and 720/60p, 50p, 30p, 25p and 24p (native) in AVCHD’s highest-quality PH mode
(maximum 24Mbps).
So is 1080/60p only at 17Mbps?

Where do you get 1080/60p from?
You get it by
Overcarank 1080 30p to 60p
And there you are
outside all standards...
...the problems that fact will give....
... will come hunting you.

I might've misinterpreted that video, but does the camera not indicate the under/overcranked framerate numerically? A huge issue for me is not being able to dial in specific color temperature on the HPX370/300 as you can on Sony's most rudimentary camcorders.

Changing framerate shouldn't be a +7/-7 kind of function? I probably just missed something, because the framerates on Panasonic's full line of current broadcast cameras display absolute framerates within menus and in the live preview.

Given that DV-Expo West is only a few weeks away and the major response to this thread, I'd say that IF Panasonic shows an AF-100 at DV-Expo, it's going to be VERY hard to even get close to it.

Two f-stops from f2 to f.95. So, shooting ISO 400 at f.95 is the same as shooting ISO 1600 at f2. Of course the depth of field is much less at f.95 ;) This lens won't be cheap though.

Voigtlander M43 25/.95

I am definately willing to drop some money for this lens! thanks so much for this info!

and thanks again to Barry for sharing all the other info!

found a price in japan:

95.000 yen...around 850 €

Fine, but the angle of view will. Do not try to tell me that lens desing for a larger imaging sensor will behave the same on a smaller one. If the Micro 4/3 sensor has 2x crop factor then for me, it totaly disqualifies zeiss zf primes wich are desinged for full frame. So that's why im asking about cine lenses. What will be the crop factor for the micro 4/3 sensor when using cine lenses?

but is the AF101 cam you're using capable of taking a digital still w/o your having to extract a 1080p frame in post?
I think the answer is "yes" but I'm not 100% sure. You can assign "capture" to a user button, and then when you press that button it'll write the current frame out as a frame grab.

The question is - can it extract that frame during recording? or does it only work as a still photo capability? I don't know the answer to that.

Sorry if this question has been posted already but ... what dynamic range do you expect from this camera ?

Of course it does. Haven't seen the video, but it spells out the exact number.

You rotate the dial on the back and the frame rate changes from 12-15-18-20....54-60. When you select one, then the LCD display changes to "54:24" or "18:24" or whatever when you're in 24p mode, or "54:30" or "18:30" or whatever when you're in 30p mode, so it's showing you the number of fps being shot, and the number of fps it will be played back at.

Changing framerate shouldn't be a +7/-7 kind of function?
It's not.

Better get in line now, Bob, because I think that's where the official USA AF100 launch is going to take place.

Wow - you have different standards than I do then. I bought the whole ZF set specifically to use on a cinema frame. And Zeiss must think it's a good idea too, because they rehoused the ZF's to become the Compact Primes, which are cinema lenses for the cinema frame.

Just because a lens is capable of covering a larger frame, doesn't mean that it won't work well on a smaller frame! Typically lenses are best and sharpest in the center of the glass, so when you use a lens that can cover a larger frame, on a camera with a smaller sensor, it is said to be looking through the "sweet spot" of the lens.

Compact Primes are used on the cinema frame, even though they can cover the stills frame. And there's nothing wrong with that at all.

What will be the crop factor for the micro 4/3 sensor when using cine lenses?
The AF100 has a Cinema Crop Factor of 1.18.
