"Corrado" - A production blog

I think with a bigger crew and definitely a union crew, people respect each others turf on the set so a guy in the camera department isn't going to move a light and so on. (and if union, they literally aren't allowed)

I too had the chance to work with Luis, he was very gracious to help me shoot something the last time I was in LA and had my back when I had to ask gang members to turn off their car stereo. (which amazingly they did albeit for 15 minutes.) Great guy, Luis is.

I am surprise any sound is being captured through the HVX for a film with a budget, although I can understand why given some of the challenges.

I'm sure Adam will post details about his sound setup when he gets time. He's got some truly pro guys running that show and we were most impressed and intrigued to watch them operate. The sound operator has a very impressive independent station set up and was really on top of things every shot communicating via headsets with the crew. The boom operator was very good with the longest carbon fishpole I've seen and he was expertly moving it from actor to actor during the takes while keeping the mic just out of frame. Several times I held my breath thinking it was going to bounce down into the shot but this guy knew what he was doing.

Of course you can't just grab the nearest crew member and say "hey you, you're the boom guy" and expect to get optimum sound even though most of us end up in that position on our no-budget shoots. Seeing Adam's team work was a real reminder of why its so important to get an experienced sound operator(s) if you are able to.

Thanks guys, Slimothy and Mark I want you back for another day if you can swing it. Call or PM me and I'll tell you where.

Luis - or Super Louie as he is known on our set now - no days off for you. Sorry pal, your on the team now.

Our sound man is Dick Hansen, an emmy / oscar nominee. He rocks. There's a boom guy too. I don't care to understand what he does but he has it covered.

Oh okay! Sorry, you listed 2 XLR ports as a setback and I thought that was holding you back on set.

What has actually held you back on set as far as the HVX+Extreme combo goes? Sorry, very interested in knowing!

Glad to hear it's going well.

By the way - I'm curious.
Now that you've decided you need 'bigger guns' on the next shoot... do you still plan to buy as much of the gear as you can? Or have you resigned yourself to renting now?

Also - could one of you that was there give us a breakdown of the crew?
How many people are we talking about?

I'm going to throw in my agreement that you need to write a journal. This reads like Rebel Without A Crew. Hell, it reads better. You could write a journal that would help a lot of indie filmmakers.

Rebel Without A Crew is over 10 years old now. A lot has changed in the film business in those 10 years.

Write it. It would sell!

Congrats!

I agree this is the new Rebel Without a Crew. In fact, it's even BETTER. Yes. Better.

Adam, thanks for sharing all the updates and insights. You have no idea how valuable this is to some of us.

Thanks not only to Adam, but everyone in this thread raising insightful questions and providing feedback also. Ya'll are great.

Good luck finishing the shoot!

Thanks guys.

As far as the HVX's hindrances I suppose one of the biggest I didn't mention was no onboard power. So Monitors need batteries, the Letus needs batteries, and the Bartech needs batteries. That's 3 batteries in one camera.

It's not pro and it's hard to keep track of them all. It's just an accumulation of little things. A few too many moving parts incl. the letus.

I don't knock the camera though - we're making it do 10x what it was designed to do!!!!!

So ya know, the onboard power generally extends from an offboard powerpack on all cameras. The Red's got a power "Port" that allows you to connect multiple power sources. You can make that happen with an HVX as well, check out the MicroPod from Redrock or various other ones.

The Letus batteries, granted. But, those are AAs and on any set there should be a stock of AA's and AAA's for Mirophones, etc. I totally get what you're sayin, but it's the same for the rest of the cameras. You have to add the power port to power all of those things, it doesn't come standard. Least not that I've seen.

Do you think you're being influenced by your crew?

Not really - any camera with an Anton Bauer battery will have jacks on the side of the batter plate to plug in. I know because I have an anton battery plate.

Influenced by my crew - not really. But at the end of the day they are the ones who need to use this equipment.

Come on, Kholi - let's face it - we aren't speaking of picture quality here - the HVX is not a camera you will find on a million dollar or up movie set as the A camera.

Of course it's not. LOL. But it sure is a camera you'd find on sub 500k or so. I just wanted to know what exactly was holding the production back when using the camera. All valid reasons, the frills of a larger format camera would ALWAYS be nice.

Just seems like the setbacks bein' talked about are mechanical. Thought you ought'a point that out for those reading your blog wanting to work with the HVX or smaller format cameras such as, so they won't get discouraged by thinking it's something major when it really isn't.

I've seen Marshall's being powered by Bauer bricks on larger format cameras all the time. Depends on what you're willing to deal with.

rock on mang!

None of them are holding us back. I'm just nit picking. Things can always be better.

And while I don't want people to think that you can't make a 300K flick with an HVX, I also don't want people to think that you can make a $5M movie with the HVX as the a-cam for the whole shoot.

He is writing it.
And you're reading it right now.

Exactly, Luis, exactly.

I do not intend to publish this in any other form but this one. It will remain on DVX as long as there is a DVX, and that's where it will live.

I have no intention of writing a book or memoir.....there will be many more movies and many more adventures for me. I don't need to memorialize this as if it will never happen again.

Besides, I've mentioned before that I don't want to profit from this. That's not how I roll.

If you guys really want to make this tread last forever as a sort of e-book, make it a sticky. It's the best solution I could come up with.

As the wise Adam has told me several times, (in not these exact words but the same thought), Corrado happens every day of the week, all over the world. Just with bigger budgets ;-)

Almost every working pro on DVXUser has at one time or another given Adam's advice to every newbie asking a million questions, get off of your butt, go out and shoot it. Get on a crew, be a PA, look, listen, learn. You don't learn how to make films on DVX User or any other board, you only learn the craft by doing it, over and over with talented people that will pass on their knowledge as they are doing the job.

:B By the way, F23/F35 stomps all of those, with Genesis coming in second. weeee

Genesis is better than an F23. The F23 has a 2/3" sensor and the Genesis has a 35mm sensor. The F35 is basically a Genesis that you can buy.

That statement makes little sense..

you can't 'have' or 'not have' Depth of Field..

Sorry I meant the Genesis and F35 have a shallower depth of field because they have bigger sensors. I changed it in the post above.
