AF100 / AF101 - initial report

Is there a tape measure hook on the body, I could swear I'm looking at one on the splash page of the website.

Agreed.

It's interesting however, to see people, (myself included) pay upwards of $6k on accessories to make a camera like the 7d perform like a real video camera when the AF-100 will do it all right out of the box, with the addition of a lens.

Can you please explain how to spend $6k to get AF-100 features?
I really do not like this overstatements.
All you really need to get the same handling and main qualities (for GH1) is shoulder rig and audio recorder. It is really much closer to $600 rather than $6k :-) If you need to add cage and LCD monitor with HDMI it'll be other $300.

SOME people.

Of course you can do it for less, but I would hardly compare an H4N to the built in preamps with phantom power that will come with the AF-100.

And? Some people will buy AF-100 in our local stores for $25000 (yes, here it is called business). And logic here?

As far as I remember measurements they are not worse than camera sound, and many models are wastly better.
I have Tascam DR-100 ($300) and I am pretty glad with XLR performance with my condencer mike, normal lavaliers with 3.5mm jack are also working pretty solid. Plus big plus here that you can move it to different place, independent from camera position.
You can buy mobile recorders with 8 XLR inputs and 8 recording channels for about $450.

True that, but considering a comparison of cost required for each solution, and not a comparison of the solutions themselves, DSLR route is immensely less expensive.

1) Cost for camera = zero
Yes, when you consider that you aren't going far in the video world without having a decent DSLR, you already have the camera!

2) Extra cost for shoulder rig = zero
Well, when you consider that the AF100 isn't a shoulder mount camera, the cost is the same for both.

3) ND filtration = Thinking in terms of the most flexible solution = $400 (max for a singh-ray vari ND

4) HD monitor = upwards of what, $500

5) Second system sound = $500

Total = $1400 = 25% of AF100 price

Now, I'm going to blow my entire position away by pointing out that the DSLR solution is not going to handle everything, so there is the cost for a proper video camera in the kit at say a minimum of $3500.

Now you're at $5000!

Hmmm... would you trade your DSLR and HMC150 for an AF100?

On another subject, a serious flaw I see in the AF100 solution is the lack of built-in stabilization. This is going to have an impact on lens options for many shooters, especially those in the ENG/doc/handheld world.

The advent of pluraleyes and forced 2nd system sound has been a blessing to me in a way. I love using the H4N built-in mics as a ready-made stereo ambient bed, on which to ride the jacked in lav and shotgun. I think I would continue to bring it out even if I was shooting on the AF100 or any video camera for that matter.

Wait this thing has no built-in stabilization? LOL

Okay who dropped the ball on this? So it looks more and more like a glorified GH2. Equal image quality, sans the pro-level features.

Stabilization and ND are two critical features in my book. This fulfilled on the ND. No way the GH2 will have built-in ND but man this thing at least shoulda had stabilizer built-in.

If the expected course of evolution from GH1 to GH2 stays true, I predict once the GH2 is announced, the excitement over this will be diminished, unless I'm wrong and panasonic purposely handicaps the GH2.

What professional level camera has image stabilization IN THE BODY?

??

Most IS occurs in the lens, not the body.

And we can not say for sure what the "equal image quality" to the GH2 is as neither camera is out, so you are just speculating.

you forgot the ND filters....and the 8 bit 4:2:2 outputs.

its going to sell like hotcakes for xmas! people have already ordered, I spoke to some dealers today...

We can pick & choose which tools we rent or buy for each project, schedule & budget.

Just because in-body stabilization is useful in some situations (but not on a tripod, for example), that doesn't make it a requirement to be included in every camera design.

Hardware features aren't free. In-body IS costs money, certainly a lot more money than a minor feature such as a headphone jack, etc. Cameras which include IS also include its cost, whether you rent the cam or buy it.

Every cam without exceptions is a set of compromises. Choose whichever is appropriate for your situation, but don't assume everyone wants or needs what you want or need.

The AF100 is a very cool new tool which many of us will find many good uses for. But no one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to buy or rent one.

You can follow the corporate mantra, or recognize the fact that this being a m4/3 format, a huge advantage is that user will have almost limitless possibilities as far as lenses go. Almost none of the lenses ave built-in IS. Conclusion: camera fail.

BTW: All prosumer cameras have built-in stabilization. I put this camera in that category. Again, another sign that this is a glorified GH2.

And also the stabilization I'm referring to doesn't exist today for a large sensor devices. Probably because none of them are geared for primarily video acquisition. Expected a camera with this level of innovation and something that is geared for video would break the barrier and introduce a stabilization solution suitable for continuous video recording. Guess not.. just slap a GH2 sensor into a body with pro controls and call it a day. Like I said in the beginning, such an evolution was expected and really not a revolutionary device in the least.

All speculation of course, I wouldn't feel too bad to be proven wrong though!

From the tone in your posts, it sounds like this simply isn't the camera for you. Move along.

You must remember that dSLRs are hybrids. the AF100 will never take still images with the quality of an dSLR because of internal anti-aliasing / optical low pass filters.

In the same sense a dSLR will ALWAYS have aliasing issues because they're not optimized to shoot 2k images.

Finally, I think it has been said that the AF100 chip is NOT the same as the GH1/2 chips.

OHHHHHH MYYYYY GOD!!! NO CAMERA STABLIZATION!!! HOW DARE PANASONIC FORCE ME TO LEARN TO HOLD A CAMERA STEADY, OR USE THE CAMERA STABLIZATION/SUPPORT GEAR I ALREADY OWN. WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE?

Please!

Um.. wasn't that a contradiction? This isn't a consumer camera, and it doesn't have built in stabilization... Consumer products have it... So, it's NOT a glorified GH2 because a GH2 is a consumer product, and this is a professional product.

You put it in the wrong category.
