Af 105a announced in japan

Is it indeed a new cam or only the "good old" Panny AF100 in japanese version? Are these "10 bits" SDI output our "old" patched 8 bits to 10 bits are are they "new" genuine bits. Is it only a hidden firmware update of our "old" AF100 or is the hardware modified? Many question, too many questions.....

Give Jan a chance - it's still night-time in the US!

I agree that this is as interesting development, though without an updated sensor (as far as we can tell so far) I can't see that it changes the market much.

Too little too late, IMO. I'm a big af100 fan, but this is more update worthy and the af100 isn't getting younger . Should of had more new features and be more like a new camera. This is a mildly upgraded af100 in a market rocketing past that era. Doa, IMO.

I thought the same thing, it's like adding hot sauce to last nights leftovers. Cmon Panisonic, it's not like you dont have the know how and ability to produce a new camera that can compete in 2013.

Its a 16 bit sensor so what are you saying?

And I'm 100% sure that's its hardware upgrade because Jan said af100 can't have 1:1 focus assist because of ram memory issue.

Well during the Blackmagic Cine Camera "eclipse" Panasonic has a golden opportunity to jump in the market around 3000-4000 USD. They need however to do it quickly, be ready to deliver and include Dynamic Range + Clean shadows + nice highlight clipping plus 10 real bits 422 SDI output + 1:1 viewfinder zoom on detail and a few more candies...Will or can Panasonic seize this opportunity (IMHO: they have a 3 months opportunity window before BMCC starts flooding the indie market).

Panasonic should take a page from RED, acknowledge that they have largely recovered the NRE of the AF100 (this was such a minor update), and price accordingly: $2500 street price, tops.

I'd really love a hardware upgrade for my AF100 for 10bit and 1:1 functions, that would be a great alternative. I'm not sure though if the 10bit is working through HDMI too or just through SDI, anyone can confirm if it's only SDI?

It would be wierd if it doesn't because HDMI supports 30bit.

I suppose that hints why there was the "AF100 discontinued" kerfuffle a bit back.

Partly agreeing with RPO, though... not certain the incremental upgrade will be worth it, especially if the whole system will most likely be upgraded next year.

Yes, I think Panasonic can co better than this. Their camera output looks pretty slow compared to Sony these days. They will bring the goods eventually but the AF-105 does not do very much imho.

Oh snap! Panasonic just dropped the bomb on the Sony FX1! HDV got nothing on this 10 bit baby!

We party like 2004!

On a serious note, Panasonic could have capitalized on the success of the GH2 & AF100(ok not so much). There's no other MFT video cams out there besides the AF100. Are they patiently developing for a Varicam AF200 model to knock Sony and Canon?

This is an incremental improvement that might sway late adopters of the system. Judging by Panasonic's usual ~3 year product cycles between prosumer small-chip, prosumer large-chip, and broadcast, educated guess would be for a full revamp next year.

Or, they might wind up quietly biding their time like JVC...................

...So what's missing from the AF-105A ?

- Full 1080 HD resolution
- High dynamic range ( 12+ stops )
- Low light performance ( noise-free at 3200+ ISO )
- High bit-rate internal recording ( 50+ Mbps )

Anything else?

I figure those already with an af100 won't find the updated model attractive enough to sell their current model and reinvest thousands of dollars. this isnt an upgrade. this is having to buy a new camera.... and despite the awesome sauce of 10bit output, I don't see that as strong enough to convince current panny owners to ditch their af100s. That said, non panny owners shopping for a camera right now will find this af100 incarnate to be a little less appealing in comparison to how the original af100 looked when it first came out. Remember when the af100 had that update awhile back? That would have been a much better time for this. I don't know, seems like a hard sell, even for me and I still use the af100 for my docu work. It's not even internal, so we are still discussing external recorders. Seems like a good, but minor improvement on a camera that is coasting slowly from its prime.

Agreed on all counts.

Sounds right. It's still a heck of a nice camera for the money, more than good enough for my uses, and now just slightly better than the original. It's not SO much nicer that I'll eat the depriciation to buy one, though... unless of course a paying job budgeted enough to warrant it.

The chip is a full 1080p chip.
