Af 105a announced in japan

Too little too late, IMO. I'm a big af100 fan, but this is more update worthy and the af100 isn't getting younger . Should of had more new features and be more like a new camera. This is a mildly upgraded af100 in a market rocketing past that era. Doa, IMO.

What exactly can't you do with the new camera?

I figure those already with an af100 won't find the updated model attractive enough to sell their current model and reinvest thousands of dollars. this isnt an upgrade. this is having to buy a new camera.... and despite the awesome sauce of 10bit output, I don't see that as strong enough to convince current panny owners to ditch their af100s. That said, non panny owners shopping for a camera right now will find this af100 incarnate to be a little less appealing in comparison to how the original af100 looked when it first came out. Remember when the af100 had that update awhile back? That would have been a much better time for this. I don't know, seems like a hard sell, even for me and I still use the af100 for my docu work. It's not even internal, so we are still discussing external recorders. Seems like a good, but minor improvement on a camera that is coasting slowly from its prime.

Ok, I buy that argument.
Guess this is only really appealing for people like me that shoot commercials and features on it and already use a external recorder.

Sounds like "we want to stay in the market a bit longer until.....". No big deal. If this small improvements could be delivered via a firmware upgrade also for older models it would be some news. I'd spend some money on that.

Looks good to me. 10bit is what everyone has been asking for. FS-100 and 700 can't claim that. Trow in a decent LOG profile and we are talking!

Now the big question is the price.

I hope they have updated the sensor or the signal processing because I found that to be the weak spot on the AF100. I didn't find the SDI output to provide any real improvement on the AF100 so for it to deliver better images something more has to be done.

1. Still super nice and compact for a stereo rig.
2. Still no way to sync two of these things up for a stereo rig.

What kind of secret does GoPro know that Panasonic doesn't?

Seriously, it's like Panasonic doesn't sell 3D tvs, projectors and blu-ray players... don't they need more people making good content?

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, 10 bit is amazing! Especially with some banding issues af100's have shown under certain circumstances in my experience. However, to release a new camera on that premise alone is interesting. Price better be similar to a regular af100, because as mentioned, that (price) was the af100's greatest strength to begin with, and this is years later with many more low cost cameras available. It's a competitive market and basically rereleasing a camera from two years ago but with 10bit out, is a risky measure when cameras are making leaps and bounds between one model and the next comparatively.

gopro has their $&@t together on all fronts. Those guys know how to make a camera and market it. I was blown away by their marketing display at cinegear. Thought I was in a Mac store! The hero 3 is also ridiculous. They have got it down over there.

Remember that we don't know if this "we want to stay in the market a bit longer until....." will ever leave Japan.

This is like a confirmation for sth bigger to come at NAB for me. I doubt much has changed technically with the 105, besides 10bit out (which is of course nice). Wouldn´t they have advertised a new sensor first thing?
But the bigger brother will record a hig-end codec to miniP2 in camera. New sensor, still 4/3. Under 10K and with the Varicam Logo (and variable framerates of course). THEN Pana would be back in the game AND have it´s own niche...

Psychology aside - we want the newest and shiniest toy - sure, for the price, 10 bit and 50/60p is a good deal. For me personally it's not that important right now. But for people working in other environments it very well may, especially if they have invested in mft glass.

Panasonic is not too good marketing wise over here, I think: When one of our CA's we work currently with on two c300 saw my camera, he did not even know it and was rather interested in buying one after he found out about the specs and the price.

They should have at least stuck the GH2's (better yet GH3's) sensor in there. Both of those already have substantially better image quality than the AF100's sensor can muster - and heck, they're already producing those sensors in volume.

just removing the oplf might have given the extra sharpness that was lacking, could have made a bunch of problems though as well

How could Panasonic after having forked out 6000 USD + 25% VAT in Norway for the AF101E, convince a rather rational buyer like your humble servant to fork out - again - 6000-8000 USD + 25% VAT for a slightly upgraded cam?
I would rather see Panasonic offering its AF100 AF10# customers a hardware upgrade deal since the old and the new camera have the same housing. Such an update should be proceed maximum 2000 USD making it possible to hand-in one's old AF100 and get back an AF105 or whatever it will be called. It would be a wonderful way to keep an otherwise quite vaporous customer base close to the Sonny, eeuh pardon .. Panny womb...for a while.
