That's not an argument. It's just contradiction!

As much as I love Monty Python; lets please use this as a suitable break point to return to keeping this thread on track with feature requests & ideas.

What else (feasible) do we want in this dream camera?

What I would like to know: what exactly is the cropped image area on the 4/3" chip required for true 1920x1080 pixels without super or sub sampling?

Will super 16mm gate area cover it? Will regular 16mm? Would be nice to use my fast 16mm glass, since 2/3" Scarlet might be delayed well after the AF-100.

super 16 is 12.5mm x 7.5mm most image circles from 16mm glass will not cover micro 4/3rds.
Some of the more tele lenses may have larger than normal image circles and will work

Here's a question:

Will the maximum bit rate for the cam be 24 mbit/s consistent with the AVCHD spec?

or will there be an option to shoot a dedicated 28 mbits/s at 1080/60p natively like the Panny TM700k?

What I'm wondering is what the cropped image area is on the 4/3 chip that will yield 1920x1080. And by knowing that, I can compare it in relation to the known super 16mm gate area, which you have listed, to see whether s16 or r16 will cover the cropped area.

Well, what you're asking doesn't make sense. The entire chip is used. There isn't any cropped area. (well, a little off the top and bottom, I guess). The active image area is 19mm wide by 10.7mm high. That area is used to create a 1920x1080 frame.

No super16 lens is going to come anywhere near close to covering that, it's something like 3x larger than the size of a super16 frame.

So what cropped area are you talking about?

I'm speaking of a what if... what if the chip could be cropped in this new camera as a new feature. With pixels at a known size on the GH1 chip, what would be the image area covered by 1920x1080 pixels. And would that 1920x1080 pixel area be covered by the s16mm or r16mm gate sizes so that corresponding image circles would cover it.

In other words, to have the possible benefit of avoiding pixel binning, or whatever methodolgy they would use on the af-100 to downsample 12MP to 1920x1080, to avoid that in a possible cropped feature, what would that image area have to be for a 1:1 sensor pixel to recorded pixel relationship?

I hear what your saying, what you are referring to is windowing on the sensor
for example a R1 shooting in 2k mode

Right, okay, I see what you're saying. That isn't gonna work.

First of all, to answer your question, I think you're asking what the image size would be for a 1920x1080 central crop out of the 12mpix sensor, right? Answer is it'd be about the same as a 1/2" chip. So yes, super16 would easily cover that.

But, if they do this camera right, that won't be worth anything other than, at best, standard-def res. Because part and parcel of why the camera will work without aliasing is because it will have a properly-engineered optical low pass filter in place. That will reduce and blur the 12mpix source down to a managable, alias-free 1920x1080. And if you go sub-windowing out of that, you'll get maybe 400x240 of actual resolved data.

So ... no. Not likely gonna work.

Barry; Is an OLPF something that could be switched in and out (like WB & ND filters on a filter wheel)?

- Mikko

I'd imagine that it is possible. Given the data I've seen on birefringent material which is used pretty commonly to build an OLPF that it would have to be pretty close to the sensor and rotation is important. Might be tricky to get all the support structure that close with everything else in the area, but probably not impossible.

Not something I desire, but I could understand the market for all the smaller lenses.

I don't remember if I asked this earlier, but one of my biggest requests is a camera remote. One of the features I love about the Scarlet is the detachable redmote controller. It is NOT a video display device, but it does have an LCD that does give you information.

What would be nice to have on a remote device is:

1. electronic focus control with a wheel.
2. ability to change ISO, Aperature.
3. start recording.

For me this is mostly for crane work. Given I will have an LCD down with me at the bottom, I am sure I can see important information there.

Also, if there are powered zooms in the future, zoom control as well.

Second, I wouldn't mind if you all fabricated a side grip that was optional. I have no intention of using the top handle, as I do love using a DSLR handle when filming. I do have a ring I could mount the camera on, but it might be nice to have a grip with some controls on it as well for maybe the same things as the remote for those that DO like the DSLR style holding.

Thanks again for listening.

Wow! This thread does go wildly off-topic! Comparing an EX with an AF100? DOF calculators? Jan, thank God you're reading this thread! Or, maybe you shouldn't! Just make the camera, and we'll all buy one. I promise. I don't care what you do, I know you'll get it close (as long as I have some adjustable frameline generators and two "wide-aperture" zebras). Barry--you're still the hardest-typing moderator in forumville. Keep up the great work!
