AF-100 Wishlist/Suggestion Discussion Thread

A nice flat top with 1/4"-20 (and maybe also 3/8"-16) tapped holes that are strong enough to support the camera and/or various accessories would be nice.

If built into the handle, then a nice flat top on the handle and the handle should be sturdily attached to the body.

Yup, a big-ass "cheese-stick" would rock.

Low mode, anyone?

Met with one of the design team at NAB and that was my suggestion along with the possibility of a detachable EVF that could be fixed anywhere around the body.

If including a hand grip I'd like to see a rotating option like the EX-1.

The rest of the ergonomics will handled by 3rd party suppliers no doubt.

The number one priority for this camera? A set of Micro 4/3" fast set of cine style primes available with the camera on launch.

What compression spec would fit that 2.5K?

We all know what line-skipping does, but does it matter if the OLPF corrects it all and you STILL get resolution out of the image that's on Par with the EX-1 or HPX3700s MINUS aliasing, moire, mud, banding?

1920x1080 is not that far off from my proposed 2.5k spec., hence you could either compress the data more and fit it into the 24mbps or maybe it could overdrive a little and hit 35mbps - still within write spec of the SDXC cards.

Video compression is generally resolution agnostic - see the program MPEGstreamclip for example. I can resize a video image and recompress/decompress video into any resolution and format I choose. This is not to say there are not consequences - there is more information so you either need more compression, more bandwidth, and/or more storage to place that additional information.

Regarding the OLPF - an olpf might be able to soften things, but if there is a huge chunk of information missing (imagine looking through venetian blinds at the world outside - this is line skipping) it can be simulated or filled in, but it's false detail, or skipped over - hence the failure of the OLPF mod project on the t2i. I'm dead set that the aliasing we see is line-skipping. :)

No hard feelings meant in all this, just mere SPECulation. - Dan

I'd like to see them offer this camera with or without a kit lense, like they do the 500. Many people would want a lense while others might already have glass. I think the reason their are some many differing ideas on the wish list is that the camera is appealing to a lot of people and that Panasonic has a potential for a huge hit of a camera.

YES! Couldn't agree more.

With Kit lens: Let's see a T2.2 or faster zoom with 9 or more rounded aperture blades! Arri Standard pitch gearing please!

Without Kit Lens: YES! more options=better!

Ew ew ew ew ew. I find the EX1 handgrip AWFUL. Since it's so far from the body it creates a lever type effect where the weight of the camera on your wrist is significantly higher than a non adjustable handle closer into the body. Most people I have talked to hate this, and I know I do. That camera is an ergonomic DISASTER. I ran into a crew shooting EX1s and EX3s just the other day and we talked and they had the same complaint...I don't think I've ever met a single person who's shot on the EX1 (and I have met a lot of them) that didn't find holding it much more uncomfortable vs something like an HPX-170 or an HVX. Maybe you like it, and if so I am absolutely ENVIOUS of you...because I can't stand the damn thing.

Also, who puts framerate and resolution settings at the bottom of a menu that has the DATE/TIME and other misc information, rather than up in Camera Settings where it belongs? Wtf? Some of Sony's decisions are quite questionable.

I know they are still in development on the design with that big handle attached to a square box. Why not just start with the 170 body and change out the front end?

Barry.

Barry, are you there?

Or, who's in charge here? Who's in charge of dvxuser.com?

Can we add a Design section, so that we can have these kinds of discussions all the time, not just when a company announces a product.

It seems a lot of us are interested in talking about camera design, even though most of us don't have the money to start our own camera company right now. I know I am in that boat.

Maybe we could have ongoing discussions about, for example, which sensor size is most appropriate, or the pros and cons of different media, or how much resolution is really needed, or what form factor is ideal.

I'm not saying we would come up with One Blessed Camera, that we all agree on.

But maybe we would all learn a little. And if Panny or Sony or Red wanders by and wants to put some of what the majority agrees on into a new camera, well, that's the end goal, isn't it? Or maybe even one of us could pull an "Otis Grapsas" (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=132566) and start our own small company to make one that might actually be better than any of the ones from the big names.

It's already mentioned that auto focusing is lens specific so that shouldn't be an issue. The camera would loose a lot of sales if Panasonic were to disable it.

I understand that theirs no guarantee that the camera will get 1080 60p and for sure, I would still like to own the AF100 regardless. What I would like to say is that if this is supposed to be a strictly Cinema camera, than why is their 1080 60i, 50i and 720 60p, 50p modes? It's not like 1080 24p is the only mode in the announced specs. The Red cameras has high resolution/frame rate modes so why should their be a problem if the AF100 gets 1080 60p? I hope they'll be at least 1080p slow motion cranking if 1080 60p doesn't get offered.

It's not strictly a cinema camera. It's a video camera with a big sensor. Its primary target is filmmakers, but it's certainly not restricted to that.

"Targeted at the video and film production communities,"

Quote from the press release its pretty much everybody. Just watch out for the Production Police who try and tell who can and can't use this camera.

You there! Stop I say! Production police! We need to have a .... word, with you!

All I was trying to say is that Panasonic is already trying to target the ENG crowd with some of the already announced features so for someone to claim that certain features is not supposed to be added because of who they think the target audience should be, doesn't make sense to me.

Absolutely.

DYNAMIC RANGE!!! And by that I mean the most stops you can fit into that bugger!

If you can be on par with the scarlet (or even alexa)(wishful thinking for a 6000 camera) in terms of dynamic range or higher, that will win a lot of people over! Especially those film heads, they love their dynamic range!

For me, I care more about dynamic range in a video camera than being able to shoot 3k.
Start the dynamic range chase pana, lead the pack!!!
You did it with 24p in the prosumer price range, and I have been grateful!

Btw thank you for listening to our wish lists in the past, I know you cant do them all, but the more the better.

Keep up the good work pana engineers, im a huge fan.

Why is that wishful thinking? The 2/3-inch Scarlet Cinema (interchangeable lens model) is currently projected to cost less than half that. Even the kittted-up fixed-lens model is currently projected to cost $4,750. Demand more of Panasonic.

I kinda of believe these two comments when taken together make it wishful thinking.

We've been talking Scarlet for three years.

Panasonic brings its products to the market; where is Scarlet? When will it definitely ship in quantity.

Great company, but it isn't as nimble as one would hope.

Barry, is a 120 fps possible? that would be wonderful.

Based on my experience with the DVX, HVX, and HPX, here are my realistic requests:

-increased dynamic range
-higher quality monitor
-fast wide lens
-dual record mode.

I'll be pre-ordering one as soon as I can. I know people love P2, but I'm looking forward to using SD cards with this camera.
