AF-100 vs AF-100A in JAPAN as for December 2012

Yes, but the F5's will move at that higher price. My entire point was that, given the totality of the circumstances, selling a bunch of A models at $5,000 seems massively unlikely.

Will they be for sale at $2,500? No chance. I know that. But if they're much higher then $3,500 then in my view, Panny won't be making a lot of sales.

Specifically, are you lads in for $5,000?

sorry.. I had to. Just clowning. But yeah, I'm sure you're right that they will sell under the original price of the AF100. I think I paid $4750 when it first came out and I got one from the first bunch before rebates and all. I think just above $4K will be where it lands. I'll have to see how this new upgrade does with a recorder. I don't know if the AF100A gets me to where I want to be for the upgrade price. It's a fair question.

Now I'm hungry for some pancakes!

The look depends upon which version of the camera you get, the regular one, or the EC (Experienced Cinematographer) version. The EC version is only sold to those with advanced knowledge of how to light and how to shoot. Unfortunately, you can't specify which one you'll receive as they both have the same exact features and are marketed with duplicate labeling.

If the original non-A model can be taken as an example, from all evidence the Experienced Cinematographer version will deliver much better images than the regular one -- occasionally on a par with some of the best cameras available.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz...

Yep, not a chance of it selling at $2,500, you're right. But if it starts at lower $4,000 there's a good chance it may reach at least $3,500 once the dust of the new release settles.

I am receiving the 100a Monday from Adorama for $4,135. Had the 100 for a short time and really liked the results using a Samurai external recorder with the DNxHD codec. Am eager to see if the update yields any improvement NOTE: Adorame has a return policy whereas B&H has a no cancel/no return policy on this item and lists at $400 more. (last time I checked)

Wish I could see that same shot with a "non-A" AF-100 . . . but that'll happen soon enough.
Looks like the Samurai is shooting a little flatter, kinda like when I use my BMD Shuttle2.
Thanks for posting that (and congrats).

I'm just guessing here but it looks like the gray background on the Samurai is smoother, as if it was having less difficulty managing the detail. Yeah, I really wish I could see that same shot on the AF100. Thanks for posting. Keep 'em coming! ;)

Technically the AVCHD output on the 100A is the same as the 100 but the SDI out is dithered 10 bit on the 100A, so I think this comparison is as good as old 100 vs 100A (unless the chip upgrade helps the AVCHD?)

what I am really glad to see here is the window has its detail back but the chair also has lifted shadows! Without doubt from this test the 100A via external recorder appears to have more latitude via 10 bit than via AVCHD?

looks positive to me, not a rush out and swap right now positive but I would be interested in swapping out to this for my "owned" camera in the future, must consider that the upgrade firmware is included so its not all about thev10 bit for the extra cash. None of the other 8 bit cameras seem worth it to me (unless I was starting out again maybe) I'd rather wait until I have the cash to move up to a used F3 or the AF100 successor. BMCC will suffice for absolute image priority for soe of my work once it comes out in mFT, ill always have a Panny for broadcast/corporate works and dithered 10 bit in a 422 I frame deliverable will please a few of my clients.

Thanks for posting.

If we're testing the dithering, how about a picture of a big solid color (like the sky), where banding was known to occur? (I can't see banding on the wall or the box or the chair, so that's a good start).

From the pictures you posted, it looks like the highlights are maintaining their colors. But I'd like to see a test with slightly overexposed skin tones, say at 80+ IRE.

It seems samurai has not captured full range, only 16-235. thats why it looks lighter. Need to fix that in nle to have better match with avchd file

I had an af100 for a short while with the samurai before purchasing the af100a. I think the improved results (using the samurai) are quite similar, though I do not have the af100 to side by side with the 100a. My instinct is that if I had owned a 100 I might regret switching out for the 100a. For me, the Samurai is really what makes the 100's image work, plus I really love the functionality of this cam!

I 100% agree that recording to a better codec in 4:2:2 and less compression such as ProRes, DNxHD and of course fully uncompressed makes a difference even with the AF100 (non A).

Preston your samurai footage doenst handle the higlights so much better. Drag down the avchd footage to below 100 ire and you have same amount of highlight detail as samurai footage. Your just fooling yourself with the samurai footage.

Thanks for pointing that out, after looking at the shots again I can see the Sanurai footage has had the shadows lifted and the highlights brought down.

i registered that he had included the waveform graphic and took it that he would only do that if they matched and just ignored the actual readings.

any chance we could get a shot that has a legal balanced waveform in camera, maybe saved as frames in camera or as PNG inside your NLE for reference, something for timecode too if you're shooting outside or have a window in shot so we know its the same frame.

sorry for the list :0)

To get a fair test he needs to record prores on samurai to get same waveform. dnxhd doesnt work right on levels, records 16-235

Really? That is strange, I use Prores via my Hyperdeck shuttle.

Adam, maybe this has affected your footage? You shoot to DNxHD right?
