AF-100 vs AF-100A in JAPAN as for December 2012

Except it isn't, is it? "It is an enhanced 8Bit." Am I the only one that's a wee bit confused on what that means?

It means it is better than the original AF100 but not a full 10 Bit. It certainly can help in gradations of tone.

And - not to be too much of a negative Nelly here - isn't expand focus something that could easily be added as a firmware upgrade to the original AF100?

It is not possible as the microprocessor is different.

Just not sure how this camera is going to compete with the latest & greatest at NAB in 4 months. But who knows - if the camera produces lovely images, I suppose it doesn't matter too much.

Actually it continues to compete very well with the FS100. It still is a price performance, feature rich product over others in the same price range.

Thanks,

BTW, Jan's not departing, she's just changed jobs. She's not in product management anymore, she's in sales, I think she's in charge of the Northeast region of the USA. As I understand it (and I'm sure she can clarify) her prior job involved working with the engineers and development teams in Japan, to build the products that she thought would sell here in the USA. Now, she's turned that responsibility over and is instead focusing on actually selling Panasonic products here in the USA, specifically in the Northeast.

Pretty good synopsis Barry.

Thanks,

Jan

Jan- I didn't think you were leaving completely, but will your new job in sales entail interacting with the user base as you do now?
Or the new person in product management will?

Well I have been on the internet since 1992, and I rather doubt that will change. Since this is not exactly called out in the job description, other product managers tend to read and take notes where I have chosen to interact. Sometimes that is very rewarding, other times, a little frustrating. So the long story is I just became more of the tail that wags the dog instead of the other way around. ;-) I still have an avenue to let them know feature sets and point to threads that happen here that are of product relevance. So the short of it, you will still see me around here, perhaps not as often.

Best,

Jan

Anybody seen any footage from the new camera? I'm curious to see how the dithering improves the banding. Also want to see if the highlight handling is any different (since it's a new processor).

The look depends upon which version of the camera you get, the regular one, or the EC (Experienced Cinematographer) version. The EC version is only sold to those with advanced knowledge of how to light and how to shoot. Unfortunately, you can't specify which one you'll receive as they both have the same exact features and are marketed with duplicate labeling.

If the original non-A model can be taken as an example, from all evidence the Experienced Cinematographer version will deliver much better images than the regular one -- occasionally on a par with some of the best cameras available.

Well, without debating which camera is better, not sure people will be clamoring for the FS100 either. Of course, Sony has already come out with or announced at least 4 new large sensor video cameras this year, plus several DSLRs with NAB still to come. Obviously the BMC announced and will likely begin delivery early next year. A few other announced cameras, like the Bolex, are likely to see the light of day in 2013 as well. RED has already lowered prices on some lower end cameras. And of course, many current AF100 users might loathe the idea of idea of buying a new camera for essentially 2 new features - and that would include any TV stations already owning them or rental houses.

Given all of that, I think much will depend on the AF100A's pricing. At $5,000, it's hard to see this camera selling many units. If it's $2,500, it will likely sell like hot cakes. Certainly I'd pick one up - I love it's form factor and all the bells & whistles.

Everything depends on price. Them Sony PMW F5s are one thing at $16,490 but at $8245 they'll sell like hotcakes! Anything at 1/2 price will sell like... well... hotcakes! I don't mean to be a wise a$$ but... no, I do.

Just got back from

They were 1/2 price, and amazingly, selling like hotcakes!!!

Yes, but the F5's will move at that higher price. My entire point was that, given the totality of the circumstances, selling a bunch of A models at $5,000 seems massively unlikely.

Will they be for sale at $2,500? No chance. I know that. But if they're much higher then $3,500 then in my view, Panny won't be making a lot of sales.

Specifically, are you lads in for $5,000?
