AF-100 using Canon FD lenses?

Here's an ungraded frame grab from a GH13 shot at 720p using a Canon FD 35mm f2 lens @ f2. If I can get this kind of look with less aliasing and all the traditional camcorder bells and whistles on the AF100, I'll be a happy happy cameraman!

Lets not forget there is plethora of other lens mounts that result in beautiful images. I for one have a complete set of M42 Chinon's...beautiful soft images. Also, I got a small army of medium format Bronica ETRS...those lenses are real pleasant to the eye...soft and subtle...medium format though...heck but they work.

And honestly, this is what is so great about the AF100 (one of the many things) and the m4/3 mount in general. That short flange distance means I can use lenses I love that I couldn't use on Canon DSLR's or almost any other video format. And the same thing can be said with just about any lens: got a set of lenses lying around you love the look of? Want to use them in video? Buy an adapter, and you're up and shooting! There are no wrong choices here, just whatever aesthetic pleases you the most :)

Hey Barry, which 4 or 5 CP's you think are the must have's for the AF-100...and if you already covered this subject somewhere else could you direct me to it? Thanks
I like the 35, 50, and 85, and then you need a wide. Some like the 21, some like the 25, some like the 28. I think there are people who don't like the 25 because it's not the fastest, so maybe the 21?

I'm interested in seeing the results from these lenses too, I've got a full set of them from the 35mm adapter days. I've also got a full set of EF glass for my 7D so I could use either on an af100 but the aperture control of my FDs would be nice.

If you look at the films in my sig link all but 'Sthlm Rim Shots' are shot with GH1 and Canon FDs. Sthlm Rim Shots is done with the Lumix 14-140 in autofocus mode.

Nice Martti!

FDs look pretty damn "filmic" (whatever the hell that means) to me. Maybe I mean the bokah is not pretty like a Leica or Zeiss but more of a generalized blur. For a pretty or dreamy film I'd defiantly want to go with Leicas though.

My five CPs…

21mm
28mm
35mm
50mm
85mm

Yep CP's are the professional way to go it seems, though not possible for a 20 year old college kid like myself. Too bad even that 21mm will only be a 42 equivalent. The 18 would be 36 and slow. Not like I can afford the anyways haha. But we'll have this trouble with all lenses. Can't use fisheyes either because there is distortion. A manufacturer really needs to step up to the plate and make a cheap 12 to 15mm range prime that looks sharp and has MF.

If I did have that kind of lens money though I'd consider the cine-xenars too though. http://www.abelcine.com/store/Schneider-Cine-Xenar-Lenses/

Also, here is a post from Adam M on cinema5d about alt lenses. This and other resources show that old olympus, minolta rokkor, pentax and then of course nikon (and FD's for m4/3) are great cheap choices:

Quote:
"Lots of great primes to try, many work with a tight budget.

I shoot mostly alternate glass, and still do even with the new firmware. I've sold all of my canon lenses but two, because the alt glass is superior for video and stills.

This is my first post here on Cinema5D, so i'll share some juicy secrets:

Here's my short list:
Pentax SMC 20mm f4 Great lens, incredibly small. Good luck finding one, but if you do ! $300
Olympus OM Zuiko 28mm f3.5 Not super fast, but super small and incredibly sharp. Sharper than the Canon and better tonal range $50-$80
Carl Zeiss 28mm f2.8 distagon A legendary 28mm, but i prefer my zuiko 28mm $300
Carl Zeiss Jena Flektagon 35mm f2.4 Insanely sharp, incredible lack of distortion, fantastic close focusing. Absolutely killer. $100-200
Pentax Super-Takumar 50mm f1.4 Some versions have thorium radioactive glass (not harmful) and it's an incredibly dreamy lens. One of my favorites, ever. $40 !
Pentax SMC 50mm f1.4 Many say it's better than the legendary Zeiss and i agree. Amazing contrast, punch. Far better than the canon 50mm f1.4, and only $100-$150 You need to modify the lens a little to not hit the mirror. Easy 5 mins.
Contax Carl Zeiss 35-70mm f3.4 As good or better than every Canon L prime within it's range. Better than the primes ! Killer macro mode too. Must have lens. $350
Minolta Rokkor 58mm f1.2 The legend. You need to hack the back or get a custom mount, but woah, f1.4 and SHARP WIDE OPEN. Arguably better than the $4500 Noct-Nikkor. I got mine for $250, but i hear the price is running up these days
Leica R 90mm f2 Summicron This thing is like two lenses in one. Wide open it's sharp but beautifully dreamy and 3D - great for headshots (a bit like the Pentax Super-Takumar 50mm f1.4 radioactive). Stopped down it's razor sharp. Leica lenses have this wonderful way they 'draw' and the results have this '3d' look to them. Some clients have specifically asked for the '3d' lens. $300 There's an APO corrected version which is blazing sharp wide open, much more expensive, and not as good for portraits.

So no.. You don't have to shoot Nikon. There's a lot better alternate lenses than Nikon, and they're cheap. All of these lenses work on your 5D with the right adapter, available on ebay for $20-$45 each. Many have focus confirm chips so they 'beep' when in focus.

Build an entire rig for half the price (or less) of a Canon L lens.

The killer price / performance setup:
Olympus OM Zuiko 28mm f3.5 $50-$80 It's not just good for the price, it's good for ANY price. This lens is sick
Pentax SMC 50mm f1.4 $100-$150 Fast, razor sharp, near as good as a 50mm gets. Period.
Canon 85mm f1.8 $300-$400 Yep, not an alternate... This thing should be called an L lens. They're incredible, cheap, fast and way-overlooked.

World-class quality with a wide, standard and semi telephoto for only $500-$600ish wow

I've got around 23 alt lenses, done numerous shootouts, obsessed over reviews and tech specs. You can get really great stuff cheap, if you don't mind manual focus (great) and manual aperture (great)

Good luck. There's a whole world of amazing (and dirt cheap) lenses which work on the dreamy 5D"

this seems like an unnecessarily negative post - do you have some grudge against people using fd lenses on the af100?

Well then I apologize, it was not meant to be negative and I have no grudge against them, in fact I have never tried them because of the compatibility issues.

I'd like to personally thank you guys for averting an escalation here.
After the increasing negativity here culminated in the past week in the disparagement of Philip Bloom's work, and I began seeing posts on other forums referring to DVXuser as the place where people trash each other, and each other's work, it's great to see people resolve potential conflict- as refreshing as a beautiful bokeh!

I've had no trouble out of my FDs so I am looking forward to using them on the AF100...

The crown jewels of my collection are my 35mm f2.0, my 50mm f1.2, and my baby- 85mm f1.2. I got them for dirt cheat at pawn shops here in Houston, paid less than 500.00 for all 7 of my lenses!

I wonder about the Zeiss though, but I have to wait for some paying gigs to get them. I am also interested about using anamorphic adapters or pure lenses, but that's for another thread. Sufficed to say, I am stoked about integrating the AF100 into my current workflow... I mean isn't that the appeal for a GH13 user? To take what you have and migrate it over without missing a beat and adding some punch at the same time.

I will say also that keeping FDs in good shape, and getting them shopped when you get them and every once in a while, improves their performance and keeps a clean image on your sensors. CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) is a must. I only say this because no one ever does. I think it's assumed, but you never know.

I use FD's more than my EOS (with Redrock adapter) and I would highly recommend the Novoflex. It's several times the price of the aforementioned adapters, but it's worth the price. I had the low-cost Fotodiox, and had it stuck to a lens for quite a while. Same thing with another inexpensive adapter.
Novoflex!

How was you able to finally remove it Pelican?

To be honest, I'm not really sure. I fiddled with it for a number of days, put it down, came back to it, and suddenly bam! it came off.
Stuck was my favorite, the FD 35/2 SSC and I was ready to break out the dremel.
