Af 100 Recording to Ki Pro Mini

Hello Gentlemen. My Af100 and Ki Pro Mini are working fine and when i hit the record buton
the Ki Pro records properly. The only problem is that the camera will not record to the Ki Pro without an SD card in the camera. Am I missing something here? Has anyone encountered this?
With the SD card out, the camera reads "NO CARD" and will not record to the Ki Pro.
Can anyone out there help me out?

Thanks in Advance!!

works the same way with all recorders, not sure if there's a workaround or not. But why wouldn't you want to record to both for redundancy anyways?

Thanks vcfilms - you are right about having a back up. Just concerned about image quality if the signal is being split.

What's being split? When you connect the cam to a monitor, does the signal fade? Why not just compare both recordings, and I agree with VCfilms that having that back up is quite nice...

Sorry, didn't mean to use the word 'split.' I'm asking whether or not the image degrades if being recorded to both the sd and the cf cards.

The camera doesn't know it has an external recorder on it (at least I've never had a unit that did) so when it doesn't have a card in it the camera thinks there is nothing to record to. Apparently, when you do record with an SD card present a signal is sent down the SDI path that trips the external Ki Pro unit. So nothing at all is wrong with your unit. I 100% agree on the idea of redundancy, but if you don't want to it isn't necessary.

mmadau,

How do you like your Ki Pro Mini? I am thinking of getting one, but I have some concerns about powering it.

Where are you guys buying these? Every place I've called says they don't have them yet, even though "they are shipping."

I am shooting a pilot for a movie over the next 4 days. 2 days studio and 2 days locations - all interiors. I have been using an HVX with a firestore fs100 for years - shooting pretty much everything under the sun - I mean in Mexico. Never failed me. So I became hooked on shooting to a drive. I researched all the available drives out there at the time and the choice was between the Nanoflash and the
Ki Pro Mini - small size being important. The nanoflash shoots mpeg 4 and the ki pro shoots apple pro res. Shoot apple pro res, edit in apple pro res just basically convinced me. This pilot will be heavy on CGi so I will be shooting pro res HQ. If I can, with permission of the director of course, I'll try to post something next week. Thanks again for making things clear for me.

I was going to mention that the Anton battery plate and Zacuto adapter to fit my rails haven't arrived yet. The battery plate will power the ki pro mini ( via Dtap) as well as the camera. I've had to make
my own 12 battery system with a 90 degree 4 pin xlr adapter. Works good.

Hey, it took that long for mine to come in. I just got it 2 weeks ago. Must be getting popular. Have you tried Cinequip White in Toronto?

seems that it is just as long to wait for the KiPro Mini as it is for the Samurai, which on my budget is looking to be the best way to go all around (especially after buying the camera... I'm going through The DV Shop here in TO)

Don't forget that the Samurai includes a high quality monitor AND costs less. And don't forget that the Ninja is shipping now.

I'm used to shooting HVX with FS100 as well. But the FS100 has a small battery attached, while you have to supply external power to the KPM, which can make the whole package a little more bulky (as you demonstrated with your system).

Please let us know how your shoot goes. I would especially like to see if there is a difference in image quality between the internal codec and the prores, especially in scenes with lots of detail and motion.

Oh, and by the way, the Nanoflash's codec uses MPEG2.

True, the monitor and cost is also a big sell. I've already got the money set aside for the Samurai package when it is released. Hopefully it will be early summer rather than later. ;-)
I had thoughts of a Ninja in the meantime, but I just don't have the budget for one now then the Samurai later, so I'll have to hold off.

Hey Guys; Finished up late this morning and the shoot went really well. The AF100 and the Ki Pro Mini are a nice match. It's really all about having to go through the boiling pot of an actual shoot
when you really find out about all those little things that don't get written up in any manuals. One of these was interesting. The camera records .mts files to the SD card and apple pro res to the Ki pro.
I'm on a mac system and will have to convert the .mts files (mpeg) to apple pro res. Final cut pro didn't recognize the .mts files nor did quicktime pro. So maybe I'm behind again. Hard to keep up with all these
cool codecs. Anyway, will figure this out. I'll try to post some images from the shoot.

Fooling around with FCP and did a log and transfer of the MTS on the SD cards and the clips got converted to apple pro res no problem. You have to make sure that you keep all the original files in the AVCHD folder. I just copied over the folder from the card onto a back-up hard drive and had no problems doing the transfer. Now looking into the image quality. Need more coffee.
