AF-100 Post

Is there any word on work flow for the AF-100? Will the files be able to be dropped in FCP or do they need to be transcoded first?

The workflow should be the same as it is with any other AVCCAM product (HMC-150, HMC-40).

Transcode, then edit in FCP.

Yeah, I have HMC150's and I love those guys! Looks great! I have been transcoding to ProRez LT and from my little test's it looks exactly the same as Normal Pro Rez. I also transcode my 7D footage to ProRez LT.

Being that this is the same exact codec as the 150's, I think ProRez LT would be fine. And it's SUPER efficient in FCP. It's like editing Standard Def footage as far as responsiveness and rendering. Once we get the cam's the testing shall begin. I am sooo happy with my HMC's. The footage looks amazing and I still choose that cam over my 7D for certain things most of what we all know about. We shoot weddings mostly, and I have had my 7D over heat a few times, and thats one time to many for me. I will NEVER use a 7D for a ceremony. Maybe, a few creative shots for the ceremony, but NEVER an "A" cam. I know many that do, but not me. Not worth it.

I will be going to DV EXPO here in LA to check it out!!! Sweet!!

Pro Res LT, of course, requires FCP 7.

I have nothing against native editing, but prefer to use log and transfer.

It enables me to preview my clips, and use what I want.

Others work differently. In all cases, you do need to get the footage out to a delivery codec and that isn't AVCHD.

How do the Log and Transfer times with AVCHD compare to Log and Transfer of MXF files from a P2 card?

About the same.

Remember, you can batch convert them, and start editing immediately as the converted files appear in your bin.

You don't have to wait until all our converted to start editing.

Great.
On location, I occasionally put clips up full screen while the rest are still transferring so that I can verify with the producer that we got the shot. Being able to continue doing that with an AVCHD workflow is important to me.

And I just love setting in/out points and getting an edit underway while the card is still unloading. Remember logging tapes? Hahahahaha...

Well... again, like all things, "that depends." If you're not delivering in AVCHD, what are you delivering in?

If you're delivering to blu-ray, then yes your deliverable codec is AVCHD, because AVCHD is blu-ray-compliant.

If you're delivering to the web, you're almost certainly delivering some manner of h.264, so why not AVCHD?

If you're delivering to standard-def DVD, then yeah, that's MPEG-2 and in that case it makes no sense to go AVCHD. But if you're delivering HD on regular DVDs for playback in a blu-ray player, then that's called an "AVCHD Disc".

So for many circumstances, delivering in AVCHD may be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Does Edius export to h.264 or to blu ray compliant streams?

Or Premiere?

I'm not referring to AVCHD red laser dye discs. I referring to mpeg or h.264 streams for blu ray.

We differ on this Barry, but my guess is that delivering AVCHD derived projects requires some transcode eventually for a good percentage of what is edited.

Yes... They both do. In fact Edius 6 can also export back to SDHC in compliant format to be playable from the camera or from devices that play AVCHD SD cards (like many newer Panasonic TVs and Blu-Ray players).

Essentially, you can edit and then send it right back to the card to pass off to a client or another editor.

here ya go: http://www.grassvalley.com/products/edius_6/features/export

Thanks for letting me know on this; I wasn't certain.

If you edit this way with these editing apps, it makes sense to stay native.

But if you use FCP on a Mac, at present, you transcode.

thanks though

Or just fire a rocket launcher at your piggy bank, and then collect all your coin and buy a Ki Pro or NanoFlash so you can record in ProRes right off the camera.

I'm just really really glad to be nearly done with tape forever.
